Belhus Cricket Club Won by 2 Runs
Match report
SCORECARD NOT YET RECEIVED FROM OPPOSITION SCORER - NUMBERS IN SCORECARD BELOW ARE NOT APPLICABLE.
There was already a sense of achievement felt amongst the team when the Belhus opening batters strode out to the middle to face Hadleigh and Thundersley. Father’s Day and Eid falling on the same day meant many of the squad were unavailable. The bad fortune looked to prevail when both teams had to huddle under nearby trees as heavy showers came and went immediately before the start time. Hope for the Hurricanes came in the form of four players borrowed from the Under 11 squad and the generous use of Jack, a spare player from the opposition. As it was a friendly match the team embraced both opportunities and began their innings with 9 players.
Alfie Saunders and Arthur Saleem opened brightly with some fluent shots and quick running between the wickets. Our captain for the day, Willow Muckle, was paired with our first secondee, Sophie Hill. Batting was difficult but some mutual encouragement help them both to contribute to the team’s score. Next to bat was George Little and Aryan Pokhriyal who playing some good shorts and took advantage of some mistakes in the field to run some valuable additional runs. Varun Sivakumar and George Hill were the last Belhus pair and did their part admirably by getting the ball away regularly and poaching runs from extras and overthrows. George then stayed on to partner Jack who did his best, despite playing against his own club. At the break the Hurricanes were pleased with their efforts and were looking forward to bowling but will try and keep calling for runs as loudly and consistently as possible for future matches.
The sun broke through and the wind subsided as the Hurricanes took up their fielding positions. Alfie and Arthur began with the ball in hand. In a similar trend across all bowling pairs, line and length improved as their overs progressed. Some wides and no balls were conceded when trying to bowl too fast, but a reset and reminder of the basics soon resulted their accuracy returning. This was backed up in the field with every member of the team putting in effort to get to the ball, throw to the stumps and, most importantly, backing each other up. A good number of runs were saved by fielders ensuring they were in the right place at the right time, putting doubt in the minds of those batting. Arthur also produced a fine catch to chip away at Hadleigh’s score. Some rain returned but not enough to leave the field so the bowlers persevered until the last over, delivered by Jack.
A great game was played in a great spirit and produced a tight result. Hadleigh’s scorer confirmed a victory for the Hurricanes by just two runs. A worthy win thanks to a good all-round display. Our appreciation goes to Sophie, George, Aryan, Varun and George for taking the opportunity to play their part in Belhus’s journey to success and a special mention for Jack who gave 100% even though it was against his own club. Attention now turns back to North Stifford and a home game against Basildon and Pitsea. After suffering a heavy defeat at the hands of the Buffalos in our first game of the season we will be looking for a good performance and the reverse result. Go Hurricanes!
