Belhus Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI v Upminster on Sun 13 Jun 2021 at 2pm
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 14 Runs
Match report
Belhus Sunday 2nd XI 231-3
Upminster 217-7
Belhus batted first in this 35 over encounter v Upminster on a swelteringly hot day. The Jack Planes season continued to new heights as he blasted and dodged the Upminster ("anti aircraft") attack for a billigerent 96 in what proved a match-winning innings until he overheated and expired when a century looked a formality. Such was his dominance that in an opening stand with Mike Randall, Captain for the day (his first bat for ages and it showed) ,Jack Plane scored 30 of the 34 runs for the 1st wicket. Good contributions from the evergreen Wayne Read with 43, Michael Cansdale 32 n.o. and Jamie Fairweather with an excellent hard-hit 38 off just 30 balls as the Upminster bowling allowed Belhus to post a very competitive 231 for the loss of just three wickets. This could have been more!
In reply, Upminster were always slightly behind despite some disappointing bowling and more extras than usual (It was very hot). At 53 for 1 off 10 overs they were usefully placed but wickets fell steadily and an Upminster win never looked likely. Highlight of the Belhus fielding was when veteran Mike Randall took another one-handed catch in the deep to dispose of his opposite number forced to do so has he could not back-pedal fast enough to get in position properly! much to the amusement of the Belhus team. Upminster then reached 186 for 6 off 30 overs requiring 46 from the last five overs. With Jamie Fairweather bowling at the death to concede just 6 runs from his two overs, any faint chance of an away victory effectively disappeared. Mike Randall bowled the last over with 20 required and just 5 runs were conceded and a wicket for Belhus to win by 14 runs. Young Riley Everitt stuck to his task well to take 1 for 28 off 5 overs, while youngsters Sam Fairweather and Dylan Sinfield continued to show great promise. Well played Belhus. Thanks to Julie for scoring (Mike Randall).
