Belhus Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI v Eastonians on Sun 08 Sep 2019 at 1.30pm
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 5 Runs
Match report
Belhus Sunday 2's entertained a 10-man Eastonians in this 40 over friendly encounter at North Stifford. Electing to bat, Belhus made good progress to 64 for no wicket after 11 overs. At this point, Adam Dudmish with 53 n.o. was forced to retire with a suspected broken toe after being hit by a yorker. The run rate then declined as young opener Robert Healy struggled to get the ball away. He was joined by Jamie Fairweather who produced his best innings of the season against a decent all spin attack of the Ballington brothers and Ross Glumart until he was very well caught and bowled for an excellent 51. Evergreen Wayne Read made a good 42 assisting Fairweather with good running in a 2nd wicket stand of 97 but both went in quick succession. It was left to Michael Cansdale and Keith Dhannie to have a 'swing' and push the final total to 217 for 3 when a much higher total looked likely especially if Belhus had attacked earlier with 7 wickets still in hand, For Eastonians, G.Ballington took 2 for 43 off 7 overs and his brother conceded just 22 from his allotted 8 overs. Jessop chipped in with 1 for 29 off 6 overs.
In reply, Eastonians made a great start to be well placed at 92 without loss off 17 overs despite Baiju Mohammed and Henry Overy bowling well. The introduction of Teddy Waters with his much improved leg spin and Mohammed Khalid helped turn the game assisted by some good catching in particular when Mohammed caught opener G.Ballington on the boundary when a wicket was needed. Several more wickets then fell as pressure told and runs became harder. However, with 4 wickets down the dangerous Tom Ballington joined his skipper Mat Dilworth in a stand that threatened to turn the match especially when a difficult chance, went down. However, with Keith Dhannie still to bowl and 8 an over required as the field was manouvered there was still a chance of a home win especially when Dhannie trapped Dilworth lbw plumb in front with a straight full toss. It was now left to Ballington to marshall the tail and with 4 overs left, 39 was still required. The next over bowled by Baiju Mohammed went for 12 leaving 27 required off three and then 21 off two. The 39th over yielded 9 and the final over was bowled by Dhannie with 12 required. The first three balls yielded two, two and two as Ballington could not find the boundary. With 6 wanted off three , Dhannie produced three dot balls the first of which a single was refused leaving six off two. The next ball was a dot ball. Finally, it needed the last ball to go for six but Ballington could not manage it and Belhus won by 5 runs with Ballington on 60 n.o. having played a great innings but in vain. Mohammed Khalid bowled well to take 2 for 20 off his 8 overs supported by Teddy Waters who took 2 for 39 off his 8 as Belhus hung on to win in a tense finish. Well played Belhus.
Thanks to Julie Whitlock for scoring, Peter Bright for a decent pitch, Mike for tea and all those who helped (Martin Healy, Mrs Overy and Julie) to put the clubhouse back together after the previous night of drink and carnage.
