Match report Belhus 3’s bounced back from a disappointing result last week at Southend to give high flyers Benfleet a scare in this drawn match at South Ockendon Recreation Ground.

Belhus batted first and were given a very solid start by openers Nathan Turner and Mike Randall. Both were initially watchful on a drying pitch which had suffered a lot of rain on Saturday morning. Both openers punished anything loose and were able to compile an excellent 135 run opening partnership in good time. Turner was eventually stumped for a fine 63. This brought in Darren Frampton and he continued his good run of from with some good, aggressive hitting. Opener Randall finally fell LBW for a very valuable 73. Frampton continued to hit well and he made 57 before falling stumped late on as the charge for quick runs continued. Belhus were very happy with their total of 234-4. Steed and Hanley both picked up two wickets apiece for the visitors.

Belhus aimed to make inroads with the ball after tea and Connor Day (2-24) Paul Hall (1-28) got Belhus off to a good start and Alan Maidment bowled very tidily but with no luck (0-22 from ten overs) kept the pressure on. Spinners Mike Squires (3-17) and Brian Edwards (2-40) kept Belhus in the driving seat and a win looked possible for the home side. Belhus were also solid in the field with Paul Joynes and Jim Robertson holding two catches apiece.

But Benfleet opening bat Alan White made 66 to keep the Belhus attack at bay and despite some alarms Benfleet held out for the draw totalling 155 for 8 in a good natured and enjoyable match. Belhus did pick up a valuable eleven points and will be far happier with their form after this display.
