Belhus Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI v Essex Carriers on Sun 19 Apr 2009 at 1.30pm
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 2 Wickets
Match report
The Belhus Sunday 2nd eleven began their season against Essex Carriers at North Stifford. Essex Carriers opened up with batsman Sotherby and Warner, and were looking in great form until Micheal Fogg took an athletic catch from his own bowling sending Sotherby back to the pavilion for 38 runs. With Belhus struggling to take wickets they decided to slow the ball down, introducing young leg spinner Harry Levy to the attack. This had a positive effect with Levy dismissing Fisher for 13 runs, caught by slip fielder Mike Randall. Spinners Mike Randall, and Cliff Cansdale then took over and kept the runs to a minimum with Cansdale removing Warner for 46, stumped by Jack Day, and Randall removing Skipper for 6 runs, again another stumping by Jack Day. Good bowling performances from Randall taking 2 wickets from 4 overs, Cansdale taking 2 wickets from 8 overs for just 22 runs, Levy with 1 wicket from his 8 overs, and a late surge from double wicket taker Rob Long helped restrict Essex Carriers to 160-9 from their 40 overs.
In reply, Belhus opened up with Michael Fogg and Mike Randall who were looking relatively comfortable reaching 40 runs until Fogg was dismissed on 19 runs by slow bowler Toplis. Skipper Darren Frampton came to the crease but was a bit impatient, and was dismissed for 11 runs trying to launch spinner Sotherby back over his head. With Ryan Wells run out without scoring Belhus needed a good innings from opener Mike Randall and certainly got one, with Randall scoring 65 runs until he was bowled in the 39th over by Skipper. A nail biting finale witnessed Harry Levy and Rob Long scoring 8 runs from the last over to see Belhus home by 2 wickets. Other valuable innings saw Chris Young score 16 runs, and Jack Day score 13 runs. The pick of the bowlers for Essex Carriers was Toplis taking 2 wickets from his 8 overs, conceding just 22 runs.
