Belhus Cricket Club Under 13 Spitfires v Benfleet on Sun 05 Sep 2021 at 12:00
Match was Tied - but Lost due to wickets tally
Match report
Finals day, and for the first time ever with Belhus CC as the hosting venue saw our U11s, U13s and U15s all reaching the final.
The u13s welcomed Benfleet, and from previous encounters in the season knew going in that it would be a very difficult game. Winning the toss Dylan asked Benfleet to bat first. James Maynard struck early with assistance from a great catch by Dylan to claim the wicket of the dangerous Ben Prophet. Matt Friend then clean bowled Davis the next over and Belhus were firing early. A calming period which saw Gupta (25) who batted long but sensible as he retired on 25 put together good partnerships with both Polybank (16) and Louis White (18) which helped Benfleet climb to 107 from there 20 overs. An excellent effort by Belhus in the field to restrict Benfleet to what we thought was a very par score. Ben Gladman bowled incredible at the death for his 1-12, while there was a wicket a piece for James Maynard, Matt Friend and Tilly Barnet.
108 was required for glory then. As per the semi-final, we opted for Charlie and Riley to see off the new ball, which we had failed to do against Benfleet. Gupta removed Charlie early but Louie Mailey came together with Riley and dug in. Riley got himself in but then fell to a short ball from Maddox Willet which left the game in the balance. Louie Mailey held the innings together and changed the momentum as he played easily his best and most important innings of the season. With pressure on his shoulders he played some smart cricket with excellent rotation of strike as he retired on 25 putting Belhus back in the game.
With still 58 runs left to win, it fell to Dylan and James Maynard to try and build another partnership.. Dylan fell to Sam Park and James Maynard was unfortunately run out going for a quick single a few overs later. At this point we needed over 6 runs an over with 6 wickets left when Alfie Ware came together with James Webb. Alfie played an unbelievable innings in the situation of the game scoring 17 very quickly and combined with 10 solid runs from James Webb reignited our innings. Alfie fell to Prophet and Aaryian Kansagra hit the final ball of Prophet's over for 4 leaving us with only 3 to win in the final over. A single off the first ball left us needing 2 to win off 5 Balls. Louie White bowled an excellent over to leave us needing 2 to win off the last ball. 1 run to tie, the last ball saw us scamper a single leaving the game in a draw, Unfortunately due to the ruling in the case of a tie, the winner would be decided on wickets lost and as Benfleet lost 4 wickets as opposed to our 5, they were eventual winners on the day.
A special game of cricket, one that will be remembered for a long time. I can’t recall ever having an atmosphere that good at a kids game ever. Everyone should be very proud of the efforts on the day, to be able to tie the game but lose in that fashion was very heartbreaking for parents, players and coaches alike, but the silver lining was that we had lost to Benfleet twice in the season and in the final game we managed to take them to a draw, a great achievement.
Thank you to all those involved in the U13s this season that includes coaches, managers, parents and anybody who has offered there services during matches and training.
