Belhus Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI v Crusaders on Sun 07 Jul 2019 at 2pm
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 6 Runs
Match report
Electing to bat in this 40 over friendly encounter, Belhus made a steady start to reach 52 for 1 off 11 overs thanks to Michael Cansdale who hit a swift 29 before mis-cuing to give an easy catch. Jamie Fairweather then joined young opener Robert Healy in a stand of 115 during which time the Belhus accelerator pedal became a bit stuck, with youngster Healy eventually departing for a patient 65. Wayne Read then arrived at the crease and with young Jamie now in full flow combined with good running, the Belhus 'gas pedal was firmly pushed to the floor, as the last 7 overs realised 72 runs for the home side to finish on a competitive but peculiar 236 for just 2 wickets off their allotted overs in what really should have been a greater total. However, lesser totals sometimes make for a better game and so it proved.
In reply, Crusaders got off to a good start as the 1st wicket realised 94 for 1 in 16 overs broken by a vintage Wayne Read catch at cover (rolling back the years). At drinks after 20 overs, Crusaders were well placed at 113 for 1. The introduction of Keith Dhannie and Mohammed Mosazai applied the parking brake to the Crusaders' innings and the wickets then started to fall as the pressure increased. A crucial catch taken by Michael Cansdale off the bowling of Keith Dhannie to remove the dangerous No. 3 Sonu Singh who made a hard hit 35. At 172 for five and with just 7 overs left. 65 runs were still required and a Crusaders victory seemed unlikely. However, Crusaders No. 7 Sam Singh had other ideas and blasted 15 including two wind assisted sixes off the 35th over but after this with good bowling from the youngsters and careful field placing, he was unable to repeat this feat and finished on a very entertaining 44 n.o. as the Crusaders innings finally conked out just six runs short in an entertaining game.
Well played Belhus, nice to win. Thanks to Julie for scoring (two games in a day!) and to Mike for tea and of course, Peter for a good pitch and outfield. Good wishes to Crusaders and we hope to see them next year.
