Belhus Cricket Club Midweek XI v Locksbottom on Wed 31 May 2017 at 2pm
Match was Tied Scores level after 40 overs
Match report
Belhus elected to bat in what proved an extraordinary 40 over encounter with Kent side Locksbottom at North Stifford. At 11 for 2 with young openers Zak Wilson and Josh Clarke back in the hutch things did not bode well. George Maidment batted well for 18 until he too got a low one bowled off his pads when looking promising. However, No 4 Roy Heffernan played a gritty innings of 56 (off 88 balls) assisted by youngster George Benson (15) in a stand of 29 for the 4th wicket and then Billy Winter arrived at the crease. This pairing put on 105 for the fifth wicket when runs were not that easy to come by although Winter was very fluent scoring at a run a ball. These two batsman however both went in quick succession when looking well set. A few blows from the tail and Belhus closed on a respectable 191 for 8. For Locksbottom, Baxter took 3 for 31 and Barton 1 for 26 off their allotment and Solloway chipped in with 2 for 16 off 4 overs.
In reply, Locksbottom made a promising start as the Belhus bowlers struggled to find line and length as R.Kinder (42) and J.Thompson(38) prospered in a 2nd wicket stand of 66. Later, with the score on 131 for 2 off 28 overs, a home defeat looked likely. However, Belhus did not give up and the introduction of more experienced senior bowlers plus good field settings and catching produced a tense finish as wickets steadily fell. A particularly crucial moment was the run out by veteran Mike Randall of their overseas player who looked threatening when the ball was drilled hard at him at extra cover. With two overs remaining 11 runs were required with 3 wickets in hand. The first ball of the 39th over saw C.Barton let off when he skyed an awkward catch into the covers, Randall running away from the wicket failed to hold onto this difficult chance over his shoulders, five were scored off the over. The final over with 6 runs required was bowled by young Aidan Mason. The first five balls yielded a dot ball, a two, and three singles to level the scores with one ball left. The entire field was brought up. The final delivery saw No.9 H.Dowen hit the ball firmly to Mike Randall at short mid-off who gathered the ball cleanly and threw it to Aidan Mason who opted to throw down the wicket from two yards. after following through off his bowling for the striker to be run out by a country mile, scores still level and a tie with Locksbottom 8 down also in a great game. It must be said however that Belhus conceded 46 extras including 5 penalty runs from a helmet strike which was sadly far too many and perhaps "we got out of jail" on this occasion. Thanks to Julie for scoring and Martin Burnley for umpiring and Peter for an interesting pitch.
Note: Belhus played 12, with 11 fielding as B.Bunce bowled, but did not bat (Mike Randall).
