Abridge v Belhus Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI on Sun 13 Aug 2017 at 2pm
Belhus Cricket Club Lost by 37 Runs
Match report
Abridge 239-8
Belhus 2nd 202-7
Our second eleven enjoyed the hospitality of Abridge at their well appointed ground on Sunday. More about that later. We lost the toss but any fears that we were about to suffer the warmth in the field were quickly dispelled by opening bowlers Rhys Goulden and Jamie Fairweather. Cliff Cansdale came on first change at the Orchid Close end and promptly removed both home openers with one wicket in each of his first two overs. This included the threatening D. Wood, who was splendidly caught just short of the mid-off boundary by Fairweather for 40 runs.
This led the way for Gupta, undoubtedly the home side's best batsman, to caress an impressive 62 runs, many of the runs coming through an array of strong off-drives through extra cover. He eventually became one of Ryan Prendergast's two wickets with an impressive spell from the Hoe Lane end. With Gupta gone, Horgan picked up the reins for our superb hosts to finish on 58 not out.
There was one wicket for young Tyler Robertson who bowled very straight and this sensible trait trapped N. Elliott leg before for 14. After a huge tea, or rather the Abridge Banquet to be more precise, acting skipper Jim Robertson scored 37 and there was a well-earned half-century for Mike Randall, despite his bat almost breaking in two from the toe upwards. He found the offered replacement bat to be more like a 'railway sleeper' in terms of weight, so he managed to complete his deserved 51 by using three bats during the innings, thankfully not at the same time.
Towards the end of the Belhus innings, Goulden showed his batting ability with a superb undefeated knock of 36. In all, this was a thoroughly enjoyable match with everyone making a contribution. A good pitch, perfect weather, sumptuous tea and good post match hospitality from our friends at Abridge CC.
