Belhus Cricket Club Lost by 158 Runs

Match report Belhus visited Gravesend at the lovely old Kent (Bat and Ball) County Ground for this midweek friendly.

Gravesend won the toss and elected to bat - and bat they did, posting a formidable 319 for 2, in just 38 overs declared in this time game. D.Sibley 41 and P.Swain 39 got them off to a flying start, pumping D.Norris and B.Maidment to all parts of the ground. Roy Heffernan was introduced in to the attack and removed them both within 3 overs, but this proved to be Belhus's only wickets, as overseas star V.I.Jay smashed his way and the Belhus attack for a chanceless 102, with 12 fours and 6 sixes, before retiring. J.Radhakrishan hit a fine 68 not out and P.Booyse helped himself to 28 not out before Gravesend closed the innings.

In reply, chasing this daunting total, Belhus could not have got off to a worst start and found themselves 35 for 4, as Z.Wilson, M.Cansdale, D.Norris and J.Clarke all fell to the bowling of K.Takhair. L.Waters then fell for 8 and Belhus were in real trouble at 61 for 5. Read and Heffernan, then steadied the sinking ship for a while, but Heffernan fell for 25, R.Goulden went first ball and Belhus were back in real trouble at 119 for 7.

Read continued to show resistance, but was eventually out for a nice 66, with 10 fours, Keith Dhannie was the only other batsmen to trouble the Gravesend bowlers and when he fell for 18, the scoreboard was sorry reading at 158 for 9.
M.Randall was LBW for the last wicket and that was game over - 161 all out in 37.3 overs, a very heavy defeat for the midweek Xl.

Belhus could take some consolation from the day though, as the Gravesend side was in fact made up from 7 local sides and although they proved far to strong for us today, it was a great experience for the Belhus younsters to play against some very good players on such a lovely old ground, with so much history.
