Long Marston v Belhus Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI on Sun 29 May 2016 at 2pm
Belhus Cricket Club Lost by 7 Wickets
Match report
Belhus Sunday 2s travelled to the beautiful village ground of Long Marston (some 58 miles!). Ironically, Long Marston had received a walkover today in the National Village Cup and our 1st XI were playing at home to Rettendon in the same competition.
Electing to bat in this 40-over encounter on what proved a very good wicket, Belhus reached 44 off 8 overs in an opening stand between Neil Sullivan and Keith Dhianne who played some powerful drives making a good 34. Once again though he failed to make a big score when looking well set. Useful contributions from George Maidment (19), newcomer Russ Blackburn a very brisk knock including 6 crisp boundaries (25) and the in-form Jack Plane (26) put Belhus in a good position at 108 for 3 with 17 overs remaining. Unfortunately there was a collapse with the last 7 wickets realising just 45 runs for Belhus to be all out for a disappointing 148 with 3.5 overs remaining leaving Randall marooned. For Long Marston, P.Marsh recorded 5 for 16 off 6.3 overs and Robinson 3 for 38.
In reply, the Belhus attack of Billy Maidment and Cliff Cansdale bowled well suported by good fielding in an attempt to defend this modest total. Maidment again impressed with 2 for 31 as initially runs were difficult to come by. Opener P. Marsh worked hard for his runs but found the change bowlers more to his liking to compile a chanceless 72 until Mike Randall took a fantastic catch at short mid-off to remove him off Prendergast which was Belhus's last success with only a few runs required. Skipper Sam Bastin also made a good 57 n.o. as Long Marston won comfortably by 7 wickets with 13.1 overs remaining as their batting proved too strong. Belhus were some 70-80 runs short of a competitive total on this track.. On a bright note extras were down from last week, Keith Dhannie as make-shift stumper conceding no byes and just 9 extras in total so well done in that department but our batting needs to improve.
