Leigh-on-Sea v Belhus Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI on Sun 24 Apr 2016 at 2pm
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 32 Runs

Match report A depleted team of veterans and youths with only one player between the ages of 14 and 44 (Jack Thomas 24)outplayed a much more mature adult Leigh side including their 1st team opener and overseas player in this encounter at Chalkwell Park. Electing to bat in this 35 over encounter on a cold and chilly day on a slowish but decent pitch, the Belhus innings centred around opener Steve Huckstepp, cautious at first and then opening up to score a chanceless and what turned out a match-winning 100 n.o. as Belhus posted a competitive 178 for 6. At 77 for 1 off 17 overs Belhus were well placed at times against some good bowling. However the innings faded somewhat as D.Cocking showed his class conceding just 15 runs from his 7 overs with the opportunity for a hat trick as Belhus hit out at the end with wickets in hand. Huckstepp received good support from Randall, Gohil and Liam Waters who all made double figure contributions.

In reply, the Leigh innings started brightly with Saturday First team opener Macdonald hitting some big shots but a well set field kept the total in check. At 65 for 0 off 14 overs, a Leigh win looked likely. However, the talented Ben Garwood who had to be persuaded to bowl another over helped 'tip the game' bowling a dipping full toss to dismiss opener Macdonald. With Amit Gohil bowling fellow opener Van Lint for 22, Belhus came back into the game. However No. 3 C.Smith who made 22 and overseas No. 4 D.Cocking playing some big shots including a huge 6, threatened again to take the game away but Amit Gohil continued good form tempting him once too often into a careless shot and was very well caught by newcomer Jack Thomas off a big hit to the massive leg side boundary a match winning catch. Gohil conceded just 21 runs from his 7 overs.

After this the innings fell away with the ever-improving father and son combination of the Wilsons with pace and guile grabbing four wickets between them to wrap up a very good win for Belhus 2s by 32 runs to bowl Leigh out with 11 balls remaining. The 'youthful' Cliff Cansdale also again bowled well conceding just 24 runs from his 7 over spell. Wicketkeeper Liam Waters continued his improvement conceding just 3 byes. Well played Belhus.
