Belhus Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI v Abridge on Sun 17 Apr 2016 at 1.30pm
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 35 Runs
Match report
On a sunny afternoon at North Stifford Belhus elected to bat in this 40 over friendly encounter v Abridge. Keith Dhannie and Zak Wilson put on 33 for the first wicket until both fell in quick succession to loose shots the latter having been dropped twice off two consecutive balls by the same fielder at mid-on. George Maidment made 9 again playing a loose shot as Belhus stumbled on 56 for 3 off 17 overs.
The arrival of Wayne Read, cautious at first, then gradually opening up to compile what turned out to be a match-winning innings of 109 n.o. This is only the second occasion a Belhus batsman has scored a century in the opening match of the season. Read received support from John Wilson, Liam Waters and Jack Plane as the innings closed on a respectable 203 for 6. For Abridge, G.Padfield, K.Horgan and D.Wood bowled well taking one wicket apiece.
In reply, the Abridge openers G.Padfield and D.Newman made light work of the slow conditions and the Belhus attack as the first wicket realised 87 runs off 17 overs as an Abridge victory looked likely. The introduction of Amit Gohil who produced a miserly spell (1 for 24 in 8 overs) and skipper Mike Randall changed the situation as Newman drilled a low shot straight to him as a breakthrough finally came.
With George Maidment bowling D.Newman when looking well set for a good 58. The Abridge middle order then fell apart as Zak Wilson grabbed three quick wickets. With the run-rate rising fast and 72 required off the final 8 overs, Ryan Prendergast bowled well to snuff out the tail as the Abridge batting folded to 168 a.o. with the final wicket falling to the last ball of the game to a diving Jack Plane catch for a Belhus win by 35 runs. A very good bowling and fielding performance by improving young players. Young Liam Waters behind the stumps excelled conceding just 2 byes.
A good day for all. Thanks to Julie for scoring and to Peter for a decent pitch.
