Chingford v Belhus Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI on Sat 03 May 2014 at 1pm
Belhus Cricket Club Lost by 1 Wicket
Match report
Belhus 3rd 171-7
Chingford 174-9
Chingford captain Farhan won the toss and invited Belhus to bat first at the expansive main ground at the Peter May Centre in Walthamstow. Belhus openers Jim Robertson and Mike Randall were largely untroubled, as they steadily accumulated a 62-run partnership. Randall was first to go when he played on. Without doubt, the batting team were helped with a concession of extras from Chingford, 35 in total, excluding leg byes.
But Farhan introduced himself to the attack from the Wadham Road end and he bowled in tandem with third change Varshney, who extracted good turn. These two slowed the Belhus run accumulation, both in terms of the self inflicted leakage of extras as well as the fluency of the stroke making. In fact Varshney's spin accounted for the wickets of Jim Banner, Amit Gohil and Mark Fogg.
Jack Plane took off with the bat to get the momentum going as the forty-over limitation began looming on the horizon. He struck one hefty blow for six over mid on. Although the boundary had been sensibly shortened by flags, it mattered little as Plane's assault cleared the original dimensions more often seen on a test match ground. Peter May, with 85 first class centuries in a career with Surrey and England, would have been proud.
Extraordinarily, Belhus managed to equal their hosts in terms of profligacy. 33 extras in wides, no balls and byes were conceded, most of them in a wayward period at the start of the post-tea session. Plane was his usual economy class while Cliff Cansdale found a level of consistency that had been elusive from previous outings. But the fielding suffered from occasional misfielding and dropped catches, which distorted the bowling figures of Mike Squires to the extent that his statistics should have told a different story. One exception was the ever reliable Plane, who achieved a run out via a direct hit square of the wicket and therefore with only one stump to aim at. The Belhus high flyer was clearly at a different level.
Chingford's Raza used his strength to bludgeon the Belhus attack, though he eventually took one chance too many when he charged at a Braydon Scarlett delivery and was clean bowled middle stump, but not before he had struck 62 valuable runs. It was a good scalp for the Belhus teenager, who had earlier made light work of pouching a good catch at mid off. Another fine young prospect, Mark Fogg, was introduced into the attack and his impact was immediate. Two tail end wickets, both bowled, set up a thrilling finish.
Captain Farhan strode to the crease in the 37th over. With the Belhus bowler unable to complete the over, Plane was chartered into the attack. Farhan chose to have one last sighter, before hitting hard towards and beyond the mid off boundary to seal the win for the home side. A fine match in which everyone participated, though one which should leave no doubt as to where improvements can be made.
