Ockendon Recreation ground was looking resplendent for the staging of its first match of the 2014 campaign. Everything was in place, including a sumptuous tea, apart from one missing ingredient, that being a substantive batting performance from the home team.

Belhus clearly suffered by batting on a surface which, understandably, was not conducive to run-making following the morning rain. As the match progressed, the pitch became drier and, arguably, batting became easier. But nothing should be taken away from the performances of Eltham's Fisher and Woodham, who provided the backbone for their five-wicket victory.

Fisher holed out to a forward diving catch by Jim Robertson at wide mid-on from Mark Fogg's first delivery, while Mike Randall made similar ground, leaping like a salmon from the edge of the slip cordon to catch Bullpit off the bowling of Joshua Reynolds for just one run. There was nothing fishy though about the home attack; of the seven bowlers used, five claimed one wicket each.

Belhus will no doubt be hoping to avoid the conditions under which they toiled with the bat, though arguably the home side should have been able to have extended their innings to have utilised all of their 40 overs.
