South Weald v Belhus Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI on Sun 16 Jun 2013 at 2pm
Belhus Cricket Club Lost by 6 Runs
Match report
An under strength Belhus Sunday 2's gave a very creditable performance to lose by just 6 runs at South Weald on Sunday. Batting first, Weald made a bright start against, at times, poor bowling on a helpful wicket, reaching 54 off 12 overs. The introduction of 13 years old George Maidment paid dividends when opener Haddock drove hard in the air to Randall at mid on and then bowled No. 4 Harley. The Belhus attack then tightened their line. Scott Stonham bowled fellow opener Burke for 39 and continued to bowl well in taking 4 for 57 off a mammoth 17 overs with makeshift stumper Paul Newton taking 3 catches. Andrew Williams also bowled well but without success. The introduction of Randall as 4th change had immediate effect as in just 11 balls he claimed 3 for 2 and was on a hat-trick as the Weald innings fizzled out to 163 all out - a creditable bowling effort from Belhus when a much bigger score looked likely
In reply, Toby Reynolds was bowled 5th ball of the innings but this brought in Scott Stonham to join Greg Mendham and both went for their shots. They took Belhus to 87 for 2 until an astonishing one-handed catch by Stroud off speed merchant Dominic Pye that would have graced any cricket field removed Mendham for an excellent 47. Stonham kept his foot on the gas but then misjudged a ball that came back "a mile", shouldering arms to be bowled for 70 to leave Belhus on 122 for 3 with just 42 runs required and 7 wickets intact. However with an inexperienced batting line up a "Belhus Collapse" was on the cards and duly occurred - of the remaining eight batsmen only Paul Newton with 12 runs manage ddouble figures until he was unlucky to slip onto his wicket.
The Belhus innings ended disappointingly in a similar fashion to that of the Weald innings to leave No. 8 Mike Randall marooned on 0 having faced just two deliveries in a great game of cricket and to narrowly lose. For Weald, Stroud took 4 for 21 and the fantastic catch that turned the game, while skipper Robert Hull took 3 for 17 and speed merchant Domonic Pye 2 for 21.
