Belhus Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI v South Weald on Sun 21 Jul 2013 at 2pm
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 2 Wickets
Match report
Visitors South Weald won the toss and elected to bat in this 40 over Belhus 2's Sunday encounter at North Stifford. Steady batting saw the first wicket realise 67 off 15 overs before Jack Plane made the breakthrough netting opener Haddock for a good 36. Skipper Rob Hull made an aggressive 59 at N.3 and opener Harle stood firm making a steady fifty until he received a blow on the arm from a powerfully struck drive by team mate Hull and had to retire but it had taken him 29 overs! The Weald batting could not quite break the shackles due to some good bowling, shrewd field placing and a good Peter Clark catch off Prendergast to remove the dangerous Hull closing on a disappointing 210 for 4 when a much larger total with wickets in hand seemed possible. Ryan Prenergast and young George Maidment again bowled well at the death, conceding few boundaries and Jack Plane returned to form with 1 for 20 off 8 overs.
In reply, Belhus made a dreadful start with Randall bowled playing a poor shot failing to score for the first time this season, and fellow opener Jack Day bowled also for just 12 to reel at 12 for 2. Peter Clark found it tough to get started against some accurate bowling before hitting five boundaries in his 22, but it was Greg Mendham who gave the innings some impetus scoring a fluent 41 in even time before he attempted one big shot too many to have his furniture re-arranged by speed merchant Fred Harle. At 159 for 6 the situation favoured the visitors. However, the experienced Richard Waters strode to the crease at No. 8 with other ideas and with a combination of good running, a fantastic six at a crucial time and great placement, was able top engineer an excellent victory assisted by Plane (14), Willis(7) and young Matthew Williams(10 n.o.) for Belhus to win by 2 wickets with 7 balls remaining in an excellent game of cricket and possibly their best performance of the season after a poor start. For Weald Fred Harle took 4 for 43 off his 8 and Cuthbert 2 for 16 off 5 overs.
Well played Belhus.
