Belhus Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI v Lyndhurst on Sun 23 Jun 2013 at 2pm
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 6 Runs
Match report
Belhus Sunday 2's pulled off a remarkable win in failing conditions at Ockendon Rec on Sunday in this 40 over encounter. Electing to bat, Belhus scored steadily on a difficult wicket, to amass 167 for 6 with five of the top 6 making double figures. Contributions came from opener Jim Robertson with a steady 26, Toby Reynolds a well crafted 22, Greg Mendham a fluent 17, Scott Stonham with a solid 40 which helped boost the total, and Ewan Day 19. For Lyndhurst, fast bowler Alfie Hedges took 2 for 23 off 8 overs, O'Neil a measly 10 runs off 7 overs, Harrington 1 for 18 off 6 overs and Jupp 1 for 35 off 8 overs.
In reply, Lyndhurst were cruising to almost certain victory with both openers Hedges and S.Richards scoring fifties and making batting look easy. At 108 for no wicket, the game seemed to be over. Amit Gohil then made the breakthrough to remove the dangerous Hedges well caught behind by Paul Newton. Other bowling changes failed to emulate this and then, amazingly, Belhus' 'last resort' 4th and 5th change bowlers Mike Randall and George Maidment (with an age gap of 40 years!) grabbed 7 wickets between them. Maidment held his nerve bowling full and straight to grab a senior career best 4 for 11 including that of opener Richards for a well crafted 62, L.B.W. to one that kept low. Mike Randall also managed to apply pressure on a pitch playing tricks at the other end taking 3 for 24 off 8 overs and a great piece of fielding by Scott Stonham when he threw in hard to Randall at the bowler's end saw a crucial run out as Lyndhurst had a 'Belhus style collapse'. When one over left, bowled by Randall, Lyndhurst wanted 9 runs to win with 1 wicket left. The first 4 balls yielded just 2 runs as some good shots went straight to fielders. With 7 wanted off the last 2 balls, the field was placed on the boundary and Randall bowled a dot ball to leave seven required off the final ball and just one run was conceded for a remarkable Belhus win.
Just for a change, that old 'Belhus Collapse' happened to the opposition! They lost 10 wickets for 53 runs with the last five overs played in driving rain for a fantastic Belhus bowling and fielding performance. Young Matthew Williams also bowled well conceding just 24 runs from his 8 overs.
