Horton Kirby v Belhus Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI on Sun 05 May 2013 at 2pm
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 72 Runs
Match report
Electing to field in this 40-over encounter, the Horton Kirby bowling attack made Belhus graft hard with the first wicket realising 17 runs. Wickets fell at regular intervals on a very low track on which batting was difficult. Belhus soon found themselves in trouble at 74 for 6. However Jack Plane, cautious at first, put together an excellent 40 not out coupled with double figures from Paul Newton (13), John Wilson (16) and Toby Reynolds (15) to post a very respectable 164 for 8. (7 batsmen were clean-bowled!) Some wayward bowling towards the end of the innings from the home side helping in "the extras column".Cliff Cansdale also hung around well to support Plane in a stand of 51 for the 9th wicket. For Horton Kirby, Bull took 4 for 25. Opening bowlers Wickens and Pearsall were both economical taking a wicket a piece, conceding just 12 and 13 runs respectively from their 8 overs.
In reply, the Kirby batting initially threatened with a brisk start until Wilf Gansbuhler took an early wicket. Jack Plane zoomed in to take three quick wickets bowling with great accuracy. Fortune then continued to smile with the introduction of Terry Squires and his 'buffett bowling' which yielded three further wickets. Fortunately, for Belhus the home side "had their fill at tea and could eat no more!". This left the Kirby line up in tatters at 57 for 7. With no "Jack Plane" in their side they were not able to recover. Only number three batsman, Grameaux, with a patient 47 eventually caught by Cansdale on the line attempting a big hit to bring up his half century ensured slight respectability as the home side were shot out for 92. Wilf Gansbuhler again bowled well claiming 2 for 28. All bowlers used had success as Belhus pulled off a satisfying victory after a disappointing batting display. Man of the match Plane finished with 3 for 20 off 7 0vers.
