Belhus Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI v ELTHAM* on Sat 27 Apr 2013 at 1pm
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 33 Runs
Match report
Belhus 3rd XI 108
Eltham 75-9 (10 men)
Michael Squires turned this match on its head with one of the very best bowling performances seen at Belhus Cricket Club for many a season as he took a personal best seven wickets for just seven runs after his team had been looking down the barrel for the second consecutive week.
With the 10-man team from South East London perched high on 63 for 1 after eleven overs, Belhus captain Stuart Morris turned to spin. He ordered Squires and Cliff Cansdale to bowl in tandem, consequently the Eltham runs evaporated and the innings imploded. As Squires was busy claiming the best seven-wicket haul for Belhus since Richard Harvey's 7-3 against Ravensbourne in May 1981, Cansdale was wicketless at the other end but at least was able to apply pressure by conceding just eight runs from eight overs, five of which were maidens. Eltham, in their 150th year, will no doubt look forward to some celebratory cricket later in the year. But Saturday at Ockendon Recreation Ground belonged to the Belhus party, with the new Veolia Mardyke Trust pavilion being used for the first time.
Earlier, the home side had made a woeful start at 15 for the loss of four wickets after just eight overs, but skipper Morris led the way with a tenacious 38. His gritty determination was matched by Toby Reynolds, who was the only other Belhus batsman in double figures with 13. Webber of Eltham picked up four wickets for just 20 runs from his eight-over allocation. Supporting the Belhus spin twins was Paul Whitlock (2-23) while Sam Hall bagged three catches in the outfield. Before their catastrophic collapse, Eltham's Bisley stroked 29 runs and Ballat recorded 28.
