Harlow 5th XI v Belhus Cricket Club Saturday 5th XI on Sat 20 Jul 2013 at 1pm
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 6 Wickets
Match report
Harlow 5ths hosted this SNEL fixture and the unique and quirky Hatfield Heath CC. Set in the centre of the village the outfield is dissected by the fully Tarmac covered and in regular use Matching Road. In addition to the normal domestic traffic on this afternoon play was halted for the passing of combine harvesters and various other farm equipment. However, the most impressive "delay" was the arrival down the route of a four horse drawn carriage conveying a bride to the adjacent church, play having been delayed earlier by the arrival by helicopter of the groom.
After the ceremony with full church bell peeling the newly-weds departed in the carriage once again through the outfield receiving a hearty round of applause from the Belhus fielders and the numerous spectators.
Now to the game, on "both sides" of the highway. Being asked to bat Harlow opener Steve Wotton took a liking to the seem attack and whilst wickets fell regularly at the other end Wotton with some hefty blows kept the scoring rate around the 4 an over until when on 69 fell victim to a hamstring injury that forced his retirement. This slowed the run rate and the home side completed their innings on 179 for 8 after 45 overs with 2 wickets each for veterans Randall and Ruck and under 15 junior Billy Maidment.
After tea (excellent it was too!) Randall now showed his prowess with the bat, ably assisted by under 13 Ben Garwood 19 and 23 from a gout infested John Wilson, Randall carried his bat for 92 not out and another first on this day of the highest score ever recorded for the 5th XI. The visitors eased to a 6 wicket victory off 32 overs despite the valiant efforts of a very young and enthusiastic Harlow side.
A memorable day all round.
