After Belhus paceman Alan Maidment claimed three early wickets, this match turned into an attritional stalemate as Westcliff struggled to score runs on the lifeless, damp pitch and Belhus struggled to make further inroads into the visitors' batting line-up for much the same reason. The seasiders eventually declared after 60 overs, with Jeremy Lawford scoring a fine undefeated 65.

But the Westcliff declaration proved to be a generous one, as home captain Stuart Morris struck a fine 55 until he was caught on the mid-wicket boundary. Jim Banner fell to a fine diving catch at backward point when he was just four runs shy of a deserving half-century. It was left to teenager Jake Wolfe to steer Belhus home and he gladly clipped the winning run through mid-wicket at Ockendon Recreation Ground to produce a hard-earned victory.
