Belhus Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI v Cassowaries on Sat 15 Sep 2012 at 1pm
Belhus Cricket Club Lost by 116 Runs

Match report Cassowaries 273-4
Belhus 3rd 157 all out

A Cassowary may be a flightless bird, but the Cassowaries that visited North Stifford on Saturday afternoon certainly overwhelmed their hosts as Patel smashed a fine 112 before deciding he'd had enough and retired back to the pavilion for a deserved rest. He hit twenty boundaries before calling it a day. Such was the fierceness of the Cassowaries batting, the normally reliable bowling of Robert Long was despatched all over the village green, unaided by a dropped catch, as his five overs went for 58 runs without reward, and one of those was a maiden! The wickets were shared by Sam Hall, Cliff Cansdale and Mike Randall, who took one wicket each. After the break, Tom Thompson played a Keep (1-13) delivery onto his stumps with the sixth ball faced but his opening colleague Randall hit five fours in a solid innings of 36.

It's been quite an eventful time for the ever-youthful Randall. The Belhus website editor recently opined that there didn't seem to be the characters involved with the club compared to yesteryear. Perhaps Mike Randall might help him change his mind. After the "sterling" work in the outfield at Shoebury Garrison in mid-season, followed by the missing car keys at Anson St George CC two weeks previously, Randall, much to the amusement of the fielders and umpires, announced that the rubber sole had become detached from the rest of his boot. Sure enough, said rubber was flapping around like a salmon trout out of water. An urgent request was sent out for size nines and the resultant delay in the 19th over merited an early, consensual drinks break. Shortly after, Randall was dismissed. Evidentally, size nines could not be sourced. He said: "It's funny trying to bat in size elevens, it was difficult and almost impossible to run. Like using waders, really!!".

Meanwhile, there was some impressive batting from Belhus juniors Toby Reynolds, with 14, and Billy Maidment, who made his highest personal score to date by accumulating 35 runs. The Belhus tail wagged as Hall and Cansdale put on 42 for the eighth wicket, Hall being the dominant partner with 26 and Cansdale dropping anchor with 13. Pick of the visiting bowling was Smith with 3-24 from five overs, one of which was maiden.
