Belhus Cricket Club Lost by 35 Runs

Match report Belhus fell to a disappointing defeat at South Ockendon Rec. Winning the toss and inserting the opposition stand-in skipper Mike Squires must have been delighted as his bowlers had an excellent day. Leading the way was veteran spinner Cliff Cansdale who bowled a marathon spell of 20.5 overs to reap the fine figures of 5 for 61. Good quality support came from Alan Maidment (3 - 31) and Brian Edwards (2 - 51) and Old Southendians were dismissed for 169 on what was proving to be a tricky surface to bat on. Punekar (38) and Sims (32) providing the sternest resistance with the bat from the visitors.

Belhus were soon in trouble losing opener Dopson (7) and Mike Randall (0) leaving them 12-2. Nathan Turner joined Jim Robertson and together they weathered the storm taking the score to 54. However when Robertson was adjudged LBW for 18 the game swung dramatically. Turner ploughed a lone furrow of resistance for Belhus making a superb innings of 75 (including 13 fours) but nobody else could come to terms with batting on the dry, unpredictable pitch. With no prolonged support forthcoming, Turner was eventually run out and the Belhus innings limped to a dismal conclusion as they slumped to a disappointing 134 all out and a 35 runs defeat. Tomlin was the chief Belhus tormentor taking 5 for 47.
