Match report Winners!

It had been a long time since the Blaze had played their last game. The semi-final was won on 31st July and despite attempts to arrange some friendly fixtures, holidays and opposition availability meant it was 6 weeks since some players had hit a ball. Some training the Friday evening before blew off some of the cobwebs and a team talk beforehand meant the players were ready for the big match. The weather nearly prevented any play at all because of heavy rain over night. However, the surface was deemed playable, albeit the game was shortened to 15 overs due to further predictions of more rain. Westcliff had beaten us well in the league game and have finished worthy winners; not losing a league game all season. This made them confident and made Belhus the underdogs. That was a position that suited the team. The pressure was off and the chance to make history was on. Christian won the toss for only the third time all season and elected to bowl first. Some bowlers were only able to bowl one over but did so well. Very few extras were conceded, very few boundaries were being hit and the bowler soon started picking up wickets. The majority were bowled out but two great catches were taken in the field and there was even one rare instance of a hit wicket. Conditions were tricky for batting and the Westcliff total looked achievable. At the end of the first innings Belhus were the happier team.

The opposition were best known for their bowling attack and so it would be no mean feat to knock off the runs. Fortunately, the first pair got the team off to a great start, scoring 10 runs net. This took the pressure off those that followed by putting a big dent in the target. The next pair did exactly what was asked of them by retiring not out and adding a further 11 runs to the chase. A slight wobble followed with a few wickets being lost but the penultimate pair walked out to bat knowing they had a small lead and a cushion to build. Again, they did their jobs admirably but walking back scoring more runs than they lost in wickets. The final pair understood the assignment. They consolidated and built the lead to a point where everyone could breathe and enjoy the last over, especially a magnificent boundary by the captain, Christian.

Immediately after the final ball the rest of the team stormed the pitch to celebrate. The team played, and won, as a unit. All contributed and all believed they could be the better team on the day. It was that belief that ensured the winners medals around their necks and the trophy in their hands. It was a long season. Cold weather at the start, wet weather during a difficult spell of form, and scorching weather for the remainder. Many of the squad will move up to the Under 13s team next year but will always fondly remember their time as the top division's champions. It was a pleasure to manage the team. I've been immensely proud of how they've progressed and pleased about how new members of the squad have integrated so well.

We go again in 2027.
