Match report Epic!

For the second time in two years the Belhus Blaze team finished the league in a play-off position and was drawn away in their semi-final. This time it meant a Friday evening trip to Basildon. A team that had beaten us towards the back end of the season and pipped us to second spot. Settling the score was at the front of everyone's minds when the team arrived. Everyone felt that playing well in every department would mean having the edge over the opposition but some specific tactics were needed. As with almost every start to a match, the toss was lost and we were put into bat. The previous game was remembered for Basildon having a strong bowling attack and too many wickets being lost early on.

The strong yet motivational speech before the first pair strode out to bad seemed to do the trick as the openers got the Blaze off to a fantastic start. Both protected their wicket admirably and scored well, particularly Oscar Cowdrey-Martinez who played sensibly and helped himself to some friendly bowling to score three fours as part of his total of seventeen. The next pair of Leo Picconi and Arthur Saleem also held up their end of the bargain by finishing their four overs with a positive score. The third pair, Louie Cox and Olly McWilliams enjoyed a productive partnership, leaving the field with twenty-two. Eighteen of those scored by Louie. Mahad Jawad and Rayyan Kamran had an equally fruitful partnership and left the field with the same partnership total. Rayyan made most of the runs with some solid hitting. The final pair of Eesa Naveed and Christian Remmer then scored nineteen to bring the innings to a close on a respectable and defendable score.

So far, so good. The job was half done. It was time to take some wickets! Dayyan Junaid had the ball and for the first over got the Blaze off to the perfect start by taking a wicket with his first ball. Not only that, he followed this up with another wicket in his second over. Every bowler's spell conceded few runs and the odd wicket until Basildon's penultimate pair strode out to bat. They added forty-four and turned a losing position into a winning one. The last four overs were nail biting. The cut and thrust of boundaries were counter-balanced by a wicket each from Eesa and Christian. Dot balls were cheered by the parents of the away team as much as wickets. At the start of the final over it was all to play for but the failing light favoured the bowlers and Christian's pace proved too much for the batters. Four was needed from the final ball but it flew past the crease and straight into the keeper's hands. Queue scenes of rejoicing both on and off the pitch. A good performance and a good win meant a perfect start to the weekend.

The final will take place at the beginning of September and the team will be hoping for a trophy before the majority of players say goodbye to the pairs format.
