Belhus Cricket Club Under 11 Blaze v Westcliff-on-Sea Pumas U11 on Fri 10 Jul 2026 at 6pm
Belhus Cricket Club Lost by 6 Wickets
Match report
A Lesson in Bowling
The Blaze began their series of shoulder to shoulder games at Thames Rugby Club with a game against Westcliff. This will be one of three games played over four days and another one six days thereafter. Confidence was high after the big win the Sunday before against Rayleigh but Westcliff were a different proposition. They had not lost a game since the previous season and were flying high. Their captain won the toss and elected to bat first. The Belhus bowlers made early inroads by taking two early wickets and kept the batters from scoring. Ethan Lucey was the stand out bowler by taking two wickets from their middle order and only conceding five runs. The most impressive batting came from Hugo Ventress who stood and delivered big hits on every delivery in the right area. Three big fours and some clever running saw him make seventeen from his twelve balls. Crucially, Westcliff had only lost four wickets and so very little was deducted from their score. However, at the end of the innings their total looked modest and achievable.
Dayyan and Clara strode out to bat as the light began to fade and straight away it became apparent that the bowling attack was what had earned Westcliff their extended winning run. There were very few extras and the pace, together with their consistency on line and length, meant they were incredibly difficult to score against. It also meant Belhus lost wickets on a regular basis. Only four batters adequately protected their wicket. Three batters were out twice and a further three were out once each. by the end of the seventeenth over the team had lost nine wickets and scored very little. The last pair, Eesa and Rayyan had a proverbial mountain to climb to attain a score that was only mathematically possible. With the win unachievable the pressure was off and both batted well. Rayyan scored a magnificent twenty from twelve balls and hit the shot of the match with a huge six square on the leg side. At the end of the innings the paid had reduced the deficit to a respectable amount and made the result a defeat by a thirty seven run deficit.
It's likely Westcliff will win the league this year but there's still all to play for with three matches remaining and the team will do their best to make all of the last three games victories.
