Match report A Successful Debut at Thames Rugby Club

This match for the Belhus Blaze against the Rayleigh Owls began on new territory. The team visited Thames Rugby Club, (Thames), for the first time in recent memory and enjoyed a comprehensive win. The morning was warm and as dry as the outfield. It had not rained for some time so the Astro pitch, with its consistent bounce was welcome. Christian, the usual captain was unavailable so Eesa made his debut as the captain. The team was also forced into a change of wicketkeeper regime that meant Rayyan kept for most of the game and Ollie stood behind the stumps for the last four overs. Eesa's captaincy got off to an excellent start by winning the toss; the first time so far this season! He elected to bowl first. Every bowler knew their jobs and most took wickets. Particularly noteworthy contributions came from Oscar who kept consistently straight and earned three wickets as a result. Ethan and Louie also bowl well and took two wickets apiece. Particularly pleasing was Eesa taking three wickets and Rayyan taking two. Both have deserved more poles than they've had so far. At the end of the Rayleigh innings we had taken thirteen wickets and severely restricted their score. The bails were well and truly sent to Wales!

After the break, Dayyan and Oscar walked to the middle to begin batting. Both played well but Oscar was the pick of the first four batters by scoring two fours and running very well to make ten from twelve balls. Louie and Oliver had a fantastic partnership in the middle order, scoring thirty in their twenty four balls and included two fours each. This partnership almost put the result beyond doubt so the remaining batters could go out in a relatively relaxed position. They could afford to be more expansive and Zaki and Rayyan took no time in hitting their shots. Zaki scored thirteen from his twelve balls and Rayyan scored twelve, which included a four and a big six! So, a true team performance and proof the strength in depth in the squad is in a good place. The Blaze return to Thames on Friday evening for another match, swiftly followed by on on Sunday so the players will be hoping to continue on and extend the winning streak.
