Belhus Bring the Heat to Benfleet

Few things in cricket are certain but one of those has traditionally been an away game at Benfleet where the temperature is unseasonably cold; regardless of the season. Dismay and delight were in abundance when the morning started mild and became almost warm. These were the perfect conditions to enjoy the game.

Belhus lost the toss and was asked to bat first. The pitch had not been covered and the overnight rain had softened what looked like a good surface in to one with limited bounce. Also, the boundaries were a good distance from the wicket so it was clear that taking quick singles and turning some of those into twos would be the secret to batting well. The team was unchanged from the previous week so each pair knew how to play together. The Belhus innings started slowly in its first half but the second ten overs were a different story. Wickets fell and boundaries were hard to come by but the scoreboard continued to tick.. Some fine batting performances but Harman Singh (17), Rayyan Kamran (21), Eesa Naveed (19) and Christian Remmer (26) accelerated the scoring rate with intelligent running and well struck shots. One going so far the ball was lost in the bushes! Christian's six over square leg was the highlight of an effort that meant Belhus finished with a total score of 152 and a net score of 117. It was a defendable score but required some intelligent bowling and some effort in the field. Belhus weren't found wanting for either. Tight, accurate bowling meant Lithra and Harman took two wickets apiece whilst Ethan, Oscar and Mahad knocked the bails off once each. However, other wickets were taken due to run outs that were created from being quick to the ball, throwing accurately and, most importantly, backing up. Skills that were practised two days prior in training.

The result was a convincing win after a good morning's work. Two wins from two bodes well as many of the players can take confidence into their first Under 12s match this Sunday. For the under 11s competition, one more game in the conference against Orsett awaits.
