Match report Beside the Sea Side

Another year, another season, another trip out into Essex for an away game. The air of familiarity was reinforced by the lower than average temperatures and a wind cold enough to freeze the fingers of players and spectators alike. The scene was Chalkwell Park. The last visit was to play Leigh-on-Sea's neighbours, Westcliff, and we were comprehensively beaten so the team came looking to balance the books. The toss was won by the Leigh-on-Sea captain who elected to bowl first. The crosswind and the short boundaries made bowling and fielding difficult and the Belhus batters enjoyed the conditions. The opening pair of Lithra and Oscar, (making his debut at Under 11s level) got us off to a good start by protecting their wicket and taking the opportunity to score regularly. This theme continued throughout the innings. The boundary was found and the running between the wickets by each pair enabled the score to tick over. Harman Singh, also on debut, played the shot of the innings by hooking a short ball for six backward of deep square leg. A handful of wickets fell but each player could leave the field knowing they'd contributed to a high and very competitive score.

It was no warmer when Belhus took to the field to bowl. Fueled by squash and biscuits the Leigh-on-Sea wickets started to fall. Although run outs are satisfying the coach was particularly pleased with the number of times the stumps were hit. It is this level of accuracy that the squad strive for and practice frequently in training. Again, every bowler held up their end and worked hard in the field to keep the Leigh-on-Sea score as low as possible. Particularly noteworthy was the two wickets in two balls by Christian Remmer. All attending were willing the hattrick but, nonetheless, his impact as a batter, bowler, keeper and as a captain was instrumental to seeing the team home to a convincing victory. Thanks to the number of wickets taken, the opposition were limited to a net score of 6. Belhus will be looking to take that form into the next game at Benfleet this Sunday and maintain the momentum. Not just from this game but also picking up from last season.
