Stanford-le-Hope Under 11 Sabres v Belhus Cricket Club Under 11 Blaze on Sun 13 Jul 2025 at 9.30am
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 38 Runs
Match report
A comfortable Victory.
The skies were grey and reminiscent of the beginning of the season when the players arrived at Stanford-Le-Hope to play the Sabres. This was a friendly match arranged against a Division one side that provided a benchmark against opposition in the league above. The pitch was hard and fast but difficult to predict so Belhus's captain, Christian Remmer, was happy to win the toss and elect to bowl. Overall, the bowling attack was outstanding, repeating the feats of our last game against Basildon. It was characterised by consistent and straight deliveries that gave the opposition little to score from. Runa Singh and Clara McSweeney began as the rest of the team continued, supported by excellent fielding, especially the backing up. Opportunities for catches were taken and over throws were eliminated entirely. Every bowling pair did themselves justice with eight wickets being taken. Ethan Lucey was the pick of the bowlers taking two wickets for only seven runs. He could have had a third but for a no-ball call. At the end of the innings the Sabres amassed a modest total that some sensible batting would overcome.
The sun finally broke through as the first batting pair crossed the boundary rope to take their positions. Ringing in the ears of all those padding up was a reminder to play straight to balls judged to be going on to hit the stumps. Most batters executed this beautifully with the low target giving them the ability to be more defensive than usual. Noteworthy calling and running between the wickets came again from Arturo Cowdrey-Martinez, who will be missed when he moves up to the next age group. The Under 11s loss is the Under 13s gain. Leo Picconi, Rayyan Kamran, Eesa Naveed and Christian Remmer also played their part in taking the game away from the Stanford-le-Hope team. At the end of the Blaze's 20 overs the team had made 38 more runs and therefore won the match.
At the end of the game Belhus were flattered by the compliment from the Sabres coach who remarked how the team would have been competitive in Division one. Perhaps next year will bring success in that league. For the remainder of this season, the Blaze will test themselves against another Division one team from Orsett and then play the Division 2 league champions Old Southendians in a play-off semi-final. Currently, the team fear no-one and are looking forward to finishing the season on a high!
