Belhus Cricket Club Under 11 Blaze v Wickford Under 11 Wolverines on Sun 06 Jul 2025 at 9.30am
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 16 Runs
Match report
The U11 game against Wickford took place at the Ockenden Recreation ground on a sunny Sunday morning. With rain forecast for later in the day, the hope was that the game would be completed in time. Wickford won the toss and elected to bowl first.
Runa Singh and Raahil Rihaz opened the batting for Belhus and they provided a solid start to the innings, putting on 25 runs from the opening four overs. This included a couple of lovely boundaries from Raahil. Next to bat were Zaki Khaled and Arthur Saleem. They found runs hard to come by with some good Wickford bowling, but Zaki managed to strike a couple of forceful boundaries, taking the Belhus total to 38 after 8 overs. There was a scare as Arthur was struck on the chest by a nasty bouncing delivery, but after going off for a 5-minute break he bravely returned to the crease to finish his innings. Next in to bat were George Hill and Arturo Cowdrey Martinez - the pair put on an additional 12 runs, including the shot of the innings from Arturo, who executed a perfect cover drive for four. This put the Belhus total at 50 with two more pairs to come in. The penultimate batting pair were Mahad Jawad and Rayyan Kamran. The pair were progressing steadily until they lost two wickets in two balls. They recovered well with a couple of boundaries, one each to Mahad and Rayyan. The total was 65 when the final pair of Eesa Naveed and Christian Remmer came in to bat. They managed not to lose any wickets and strike a boundary each to add 22 runs from their four overs, allowing Belhus to post a more than reasonable 87 of their 20 overs. So a target of 288 was set for Wickford to chase.
The Wickford innings got off to a terrible start with Runa capturing two wickets in her first over, just reward for some very accurate bowling. After the first over, Wickford were on 194. Both of the opening bowlers, Runa and Raahil, bowled accurately and restricted Wickford to a total of 5 after the first four overs. Next to bowl were Zaki and Arthur. Again some very tight bowling and wickets for both Arthur (2) and Zaki (1) meant that Wickford were again kept quiet with just 1 run coming from their next four overs, putting their total at 6 from 8 overs. Belhus could hardly have started any better. The next bowling pair were George and Arturo, and despite some lusty blows from Wickford batters Cooper Broadbent - who hit a six - and Charlie Royce - with two boundaries - the Wickford total advanced only 9 runs as Arturo took two wickets and George took one. The Wickford total was now 15 from 12 overs, which was way off the target set by Belhus - the game was getting away from Wickford...or so everyone thought. In came George Matthews and James Power. In their first over George struck a boundary and James lived up to his name to power away two boundaries, 14 runs came off that over from Mahad. Wickford were going for it. Rayyan managed to reign in some of this aggression with a tight over giving away only 2 runs and taking a wicket (effectively reducing Wickford's total by 3 runs). But unfortunately for Mahad the Power delivered two more lusty blows in his second over - both sixes that would have cleared an adult-sized boundary. At the end of the 16th over this penultimate batting pair had added 30 runs to take Wickford to 245. This was still 43 runs shy of the Belhus total so Belhus were firm favourites. However, the tide shifted significantly in over 17. Eesa and Christian were the final bowling pair for Belhus while Stanley Waugh and Teddy Aarons-Smith were the final batting pair for Wickford. With two sixes and a four the 17th over went for 17 runs, with two of those strike coming from Stanley, reminiscent of another S Waugh not so long ago. This put the Wickford total at 262 and suddenly the Belhus total of 288 seemed very reachable. Then up stepped Christian with an over of blistering pace and accuracy - he was simply unplayable and after taking a wicket and going for almost no runs, Christian finished the 18th over giving away just one run (a bye) and taking the wicket of S Waugh. This reduced the Wickford total to 258 with two overs remaining. Eesa's final over was much better than his first and he gave away only 6 runs. Total 264. This left Wickford needing 24 runs off the final over. This was always going to be tough for Wickford after seeing how well Christian bowled in his first over, and so it proved with 7 runs coming from the final over to finish on 271, 16 runs shy of Belhus' total.
It must be noted that fielding also played a part in the result, as Belhus held onto their catches while Wickford dropped three chances.
So despite a late surge from Wickford, Belhus won the game in a well-spirited match, with both teams playing their part.
Congratulations Belhus Blaze!
