Benfleet U11 v Belhus Cricket Club Under 11 Blaze on Sun 15 Jun 2025 at 09:30am
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 25 Runs.
Match report
Back to Winning Ways.
Belhus were back on the road again for the next game, this time to Benfleet. Very few places in the world are colder and windier than Benfleet's ground on a Sunday morning. North Stifford has it's moments, as does Garon Park in Southend. The Alps in January has a similar climate, although at least they have toilets and other facilities there. The game, however, was played in surprisingly mild conditions. Perhaps the Gods took pity on those who had to have an early start on Father's Day. Whatever the reason, ten of Belhus's finest were well prepared and ready to go.
The toss was won and our captain (Christian) elected to bowl first. The pitch featured a distinct downward slope so it made perfect sense to see how conditions were for batting before then going on to attack a total. Our bowling was varied and unpredictable at times, but this worked firmly in our favour as the Benfleet batters had difficulty scoring freely. Only 1 player (Finn Libin) reached double figures, scoring two good fours in the process. Seven wickets were taken, all from clean accurate bowling removing the bails. Eesa Naveed and Rayyan Kamran took two apiece whilst Christian, Arthur and Zaki contributed with wickets as well. A special mention must also go to Runa Singh who held on to a great running catch, (practised two days previously in training!), only for the delivery to be called as a no-ball. However, it was moments like these that gave the Belhus players the belief they needed and confidence was high during the innings break.
The opening batters strode out determined to protect their wickets and did so admirably. This was Clara McSweeney's first game for the team and only the second for the club. She and Runa understood the assignment and batted very well, even adding two to the score. The middle order began to wobble somewhat. The communication when calling meant confusion, and some bails, reigned for several overs. As the innings progressed the batting settled down and the stumps became untroubled. A commendable 12, 20 and 12 for Arturo Cowdrey-Martinez, Rayyan Kamran and Christian Remmer respectively accelerated the scoring and took the game away from Benfleet. Rayyan's innings was particularly special due to some great calling, sensible running and a huge six over long on! Although Belhus lost six wickets, the boundaries and clever running meant a good win by 25 runs.
So a pleasing win for the Blaze. The tour of South Essex continues with two matches against sides in Southend over the next fortnight. The first one is at Garon Park so the team will be hoping for more global warming and that it thaws by the time the game starts.
