Benfleet Warriors U9 v Belhus Cricket Club Hurricanes (Softball) on Sun 30 Jun 2024 at 09:30
Belhus Cricket Club Lost by 25 Runs
Match report
Sunday 30th June began unseasonably chilly and our third game against Benfleet based opposition was played in less than ideal conditions. Thankfully the Hurricanes mustered a full-strength side still reeling from the heavy defeat at home two days prior. The team were determined to do better and opened the bowling against the Warriors. When delivering legitimate deliveries, the bowlers faired reasonably well. Unfortunately, all too many became wides and no ball, which gifted the opposition a significant score to add to their contributions from the bat. However, there were good individual contributions from Ethan Lucey, who conceded no extras and completed his two overs with an economy rate of 6. Similarly, Eesa Naveed took two wickets and finished with an economy rate of only 3.5. Harman Singh also performed well with the ball, especially given it was his debut for the Hurricanes and his first ever competitive cricket match. He only conceded two runs from his two overs. By the end of their innings the Benfleet Warriors amassed a score of 299.
After the break it was the Hurricane’s turn to make a score and Maya Jagannathan and Tharak Panjala strode out to bat. Unfortunately, both were unable to get off the mark and left the field in deficit after being bowled. It was a similar story for the next pair, Willow Muckle and Harman Singh. After their two overs only two runs had been scored. Oscar Cowdrey – Martinez and Alfie Saunders had mixed fortunes. The former scored a magnificent boundary and finished on six. However, all but one of these runs were offset by the loss of two wickets. Another wicket fell when the next pair of Mohammed Ibrahim and Ethan Lucey had their turn to bat, but they kept the score ticking over with some good running producing a number of singles, some of which were converted to two runs as they took advantage of confusion in the field from the Warriors. Ibrahim and Ethan retired their innings on scores of 3 and 9 respectively. As with other partnerships, the net score was lower, in this case 3 due to the loss of three wickets during their two overs. The last pair to bat were Eesa Naveed and Leo Picconi. The former struck a magnificent four and protected his wicket throughout his time at the crease, finishing on 7, the highest total from a Hurricane. At the end of the match the scores were finalised whilst handshakes were being shared by players from both teams. The game was won by the Benfleet team by 25 runs. Congratulations to the Warriors on their victory. Contributions from Myles Rowe and Morgan Edwards, both scoring into double figures with the bat set a target that was difficult to beat, in the circumstances.
So, a disappointing morning for the Hurricanes and some clear indications on what to work on. Games come thick and fast at this time of the year and we will have the opportunity to exact some revenge for the defeat only a week later when another trip to Benfleet is planned to play their Raiders team. The team will be working on bowling and batting with the aim to make bigger scores as well as reduce the number of wides and no-balls gifted to the opposition.
