Belhus Cricket Club Hurricanes (Softball) v Westcliff-on-Sea Tigers U9 on Sun 02 Jun 2024 at 09:30
Belhus Cricket Club Lost by 122 Runs
Match report
On another Sunday morning at North Stifford the sun was out in full force and the Belhus Hurricanes welcomed the Westcliff-on-Sea (WOSCC) Tigers. Both teams were starting the main part of the season having been placed in the top division after the first round of matches. Oscar Cowdrey-Martinez captained the Hurricanes, while Aaron Madan captained the Tigers. The Tigers won the toss and put the Hurricanes in to bat.
While some boundaries were struck, the Hurricanes innings never really got going, with only one batter - Arthur Saleem - getting into double figures. The Tigers bowling and fielding was very tight and they proved to be a very well-drilled side. Most of the Tigers chipped in with a wicket or two, but the pick of the bowlers were Casper Cawcutt who finished with 4 wickets for 13 runs and Shiv Vijayakrishnan who ended up with incredible figures of 2 overs, 1 maiden, 6 wickets for 3 runs - certainly one to watch for the future. The Tigers fielding was as sharp as their bowling - they held onto most of their catches, including the best catch witnessed at U9 level in recent seasons - the cover fielder dived forward to get his hands under a flat and well struck shot to snare a catch that left everyone watching open-mouthed. Unfortunately the Hurricanes continues to lose wickets with regularity and by the end of their innings they mustered only 91 runs with the loss of a massive 23 wickets! (Note the scorecard reads 20 wickets, as the system will not allow a higher number...yes, we broke the system!) So the target for the Tigers was 222 (200 + [91-69]).
The Tigers innings started unspectacularly with the first four batters each scoring single figures, but then came in the big hitters. Casper Cawcutt scored 20, including 3 well-struck 4's and a 6 that just cleared the boundary. Next were Sam Blainey, Shiv Vijayakrishnan and James Barr, each scoring 16 runs and hitting 10 boundaries between them. The Tigers final batter - Aaron Madan - scored 15, but by this point the result was in no doubt. The Tigers finished on 334 (200 + [164-30]), claiming a win by over 100 runs. Oscar Cowdrey-Martinez and Eesa Naveed picked up two wickets each and there was a wicket apiece for Alfie Saunders, Leo Picconi, Arthur Saleem and Ibrahim Muhammad, but in truth no Hurricanes bowler was spared from the brutal batting of the Tigers. The Hurricanes were not helped by dropping a number of catches and the 11th player E.X Tras top-scoring again with 60.
A lovely day for cricket and the game was enjoyed by all, but ultimately it was a chastening result for the Hurricanes. We wish the Tigers well for the rest of the season - they will no doubt finish near the top of the division, being the strongest team the Hurricanes have faced this season.
