Belhus Cricket Club Hurricanes (Softball) v Benfleet Warriors U9 on Sun 19 May 2024 at 10:00
Belhus Cricket Club Lost by 11 Runs
Match report
On another glorious Sunday morning at North Stifford the Belhus Hurricanes - buoyed by their previous win - took on the Benfleet Warriors. Ethan Lucey captained the Hurricanes while Jonty Smith captained the Warriors - Jonty Smith won the toss and put the Hurricanes in to bat.
The Hurricanes opened their innings with Alfie Saunders and Aariz Varin. Of the first four overs exactly half of the balls bowled by the Warriors were no balls. This denied the Hurricanes the opportunity to score off the bat, although Aariz Varin managed to stroke a lovely boundary off the first ball he faced. Unfortunately for the Hurricanes there were a couple of run-outs, which limited the damage for the Warriors. Next in to bat were Willow Muckle and Aishy Myuran, who were measured in their approach and ran well between the wickets, ensuring the scoreboard ticked over steadily. Up next were Leo Picconi and Oscar Cowdrey-Martinez who batted aggressively, each striking a boundary. But what stood out the most was the very loud and clear calling from both batters, which was great to see after some hard work in training. Unfortunately a couple of wickets were lost again in these middle overs, which held back the Hurricanes score. The next pair in to bat were captain Ethan Lucey and Arthur Saleem. They started with some nervous running between the wickets, which led to a run-out, but they soon turned running into their strength when in the 16th over they ran 2 only for the Warriors to give away 4 overthrows - 6 runs coming off that single ball. The next ball saw another overthrow and the Hurricanes scored another 2 runs - the aggressive running was paying off. The final batting pair of Muhammad Ibrahim and Eesa Naveed saw the final boundary of the innings off the bat of Eesa, but unfortunately also saw four wickets fall. The Warriors captain Jonty Smith finished with brilliant bowling figures of 2 overs, 3 wickets for 7 runs. The Hurricanes ended their innings with a respectable score of 279 (200 + [109-30]).
Benfleet Warriors Under 9
The Warriors started their innings slowly, with all four of the Hurricanes bowlers - Alfie Saunders, Aariz Varin, Willow Muckle and Aishy Myuran - bowling accurately and restricting the Warriors to only 23 runs off the first 8 overs. While Aariz was the most expensive of these bowlers - conceding 10 runs from his two overs - he was also the only one to pick up a wicket. The next Warriors pair to bat were Henry Powell and Cooper Crawley and while the Hurricanes kept Henry quiet, Cooper struck two boundaries, which - together with a large number of no-balls from the Hurricanes - gave some much needed impetus to the Warriors innings. The penultimate batting pair for the Warriors were the Rowe brothers - Marshall and Myles. Again a number of no-balls from the Hurricanes helped the Warriors maintain scoreboard momentum and of the legitimate balls two were dispatched to the boundary, both by Marshall. The final Warriors pair to bat were Joseph Lupton and Jonty Smith. At this point the game was still in the balance, but some mighty hitting from the Warriors took the game away from the Hurricanes - Joseph struck two 4's and Jonty hit a huge 6 over the leg side boundary. Despite the Hurricanes taking two wickets - a wicket apiece for Ibrahim and Eesa - the Warriors held out for the win. The Warriors finished their innings on 290 (200 + [105-15]), winning by a mere 11 runs.
A closely fought game played in great spirit. Congratulations to the Warriors and the best of luck for the rest of the season. Meanwhile the Hurricanes start working on eliminating those no-balls, but also look forward to the rest of the season (and some more of the same weather)!
