Belhus Cricket Club Lost by 42 Runs

Match report On a sunny, but mild evening at North Stifford two Belhus teams came head-to-head - the Hurricanes vs the Fireflies. The Hurricanes were captained by Ethan Lucey and the Fireflies by Sophie Hill. The Fireflies won the toss and elected to bowl first.

The Hurricanes started well with Oscar Cowdrey-Martinez striking the game's first boundary, but some tight bowling by the second Fireflies pair of Ariana Gunduz (1 wicket for 7 runs from her two overs) and Ethan Brown (2 wickets for 5 runs from his two overs) put the brakes on the Hurricanes scoring. The Hurricanes middle order gave them a much-needed push and the third batting pair of Arthur Saleem and George Hill scored 10 and 8 respectively. While Willow Muckle and Sophie Hill took a wicket apiece, the undoubted star bowler for the Fireflies was Caiden Gunduz who finished with incredible figures of 4 wickets for 1 run from his two overs - his first over was a stunning four-wicket maiden with four wickets in four balls! The Hurricanes recovered slightly from Caiden's devastating bowling spell to post a respectable 278 (200 + [111-33]).

The Fireflies innings got off to a steady start, and then in came Ethan Brown to score a sparkling 20 runs of 13 balls (the game's top score), including three 4's and a delightful 6 with a lofted drive over the covers (that landed in the Belhus nets). Benjamin Webb came in and almost replicated Ethan's knock with a powerful 19 from his 12 balls, including 4 boundaries. Sophie Hill and Caiden Gunduz then continued the good momentum and scored 12 runs from 12 balls each, both striking two boundaries each. At this point the game was near enough over with the Fireflies blasting their way to a total of 300 = (200 + [135-15]). The pick of the Hurricanes bowlers was Arturo Cowdrey-Martinez who finished with 2 wickets for 8 runs from his two overs. George Hill also picked up 2 wickets, but for a costlier 19 runs.

So in the end the Fireflies romped to a 42-run victory and take the bragging rights in this all-Belhus affair. Good luck to the Fireflies for the remainder of the season! As for the Hurricanes, they play next Sunday at home against Benfleet - one of the few sides they have beaten this season - hopefully they can get another win.
