Belhus Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Horndon-on-the-Hill on Sun 30 Apr 2023 at 1.00pm
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 62 Runs
Match report
Belhus 202-9 (Joe Joyce 78)
Horndon-on-the-Hill 140
Electing to bat in this 40-over 1st round National Village Cup game v Horndon, Belhus made a good start despite losing opener Chris Didd who was well caught and bowled one handed by James in an opening stand of 21. Joe Joyce then joined Gus Philpot in a stand of 87, Belhus, being thus well placed on 108 for 1 off 21 overs. Philpot was then judged lbw for 48. and the familiar Belhus collapse then unfortunately occurred as four quick wickets fell, to reduce the home side to 124 for 6. However, skipper Joe Joyce stood firm and took the score to 166 until he was bowled trying to manipulate the field for a good 78. At 166 for 9 off 36 overs a score of 200 plus looked very unlikely but young Dylan Sinfield had other ideas. Being cautious at first and supporting Joyce and then opening up to score a crucial 30 n.o and hitting 18 valuable runs off the last over, probably the most important innings for Belhus in his young career. He was well supported by young Tyler Robertson who ran well between the wickets as Belhus closed on 202 for 9 with 40 runs coming form the final 4 overs!!
In reply, the young Belhus attack bowled well making runs somewhat hard to come by as an early wicket fell to Overy as opener Philpot (Gus's brother) unluckily chopped on. Horndon No. 3 Jeff West batted well until he blasted one at veteran Wayne Read who had to catch it othewise it would have hit him on the nose! Regular wickets continued to fall as the Belhus team made up for their disappointing batting for Horndon to reach 76 for 7. The only substantial stand of the innings was of 61 for the 8th wicket between No. 5 James Stitson with a well-made 48 and veteran No. 9 Rob Hutcherson who made a good 20 being bowled out on 140 in the 38th over, Belhus winning by a margin of 62 runs. Well played Belhus.
Thanks to the two Mikes for umpiring and the two Julies for scoring. and the Blakes for a lovely tea and all that helped. A great day for the Belhus youngsters. We now play Stock CC at home on the 7th May with yet another bank holiday on Monday 8th.
