HADLEIGH & & THUNDERSLEY* v Belhus Cricket Club Under 13 Spitfires on Sun 01 Sep 2019 at 12:00
Belhus Cricket Club Won By 1 Wicket
Match report
Belhus wrapped up their season with a second successive league final victory at Garons Park as they overcame Hadleigh and Thundersley by just one wicket in a tense and hard fought match between two excellent young sides. Belhus lost the toss and were invited to field. Hewson and Robertson were tidy for Belhus as they started well and when Barnett removed Vapiwala for 13, Belhus were well placed having H & T at 20-1 from 6 overs. But Luke Whitbourn counter attacked making a fine 28 before retiring. Charlotte Waters and Owen Williams took a wicket apiece and Oliver Plunkett removed the dangerous Maddocks for 14. Matt Huggins made a vital 28 not out for Hadleigh but Henry Overy swung the match in the last over of the innings taking a fine hat trick as he had Young caught through a great diving catch by Lewis Blake and then bowling Khoker and Tierney - ending up with 3 for 15. There were also catches for Williams and Sammy Fairweather.
So 118 to win for Belhus. They started well as both openers Blake (28) and Overy (31*) retired. Oliver Plunkett made an important 19 but wickets started to fall as Belhus frantically tried to keep up with the run rate. Nerves started to shred as Whitbourn (1-5) and Young (1-10) put the pressure on. Kyle Hewson backed up and stole some important leg byes and byes to keep Belhus in the hunt before being run out for 5. So Belhus reached the final over needing four to win with 3 wickets in hand. Baryar stepped up for Hadleigh bowling Barnett and the returning Blake with the first two balls of the over (he was to end with the excellent figures of 4-13) enter the returning Captain Overy. With one wicket remaining he showed nerves of steel to cut the next delivery through backward point to send Belhus to victory. A great game keenly contested and a credit to the SECPG. Well done boys and girls.
