Belhus Cricket Club Under 13 Spitfires v Orsett & Thurrock Knights on Tue 18 Jun 2019 at 18:00
Belhus Cricket Club Won By 4 Runs
Match report
Belhus dragged this game back from the dead as they triumphed against local rivals Orsett and Thurrock in a nail biting encounter on a gloomy, damp evening at North Stifford. Skipper Henry Overy started what was to be a fine evenings work by winning the toss choosing to bat. It was a damp evening and run scoring was not easy but Belhus accumulated steadily as openers Overy (12) and Sammy Fairweather (10) got things underway for the hosts. Robert Healy (25) and Oliver Plunkett (25) increased the tempo, both retiring unbeaten and Tyler Robertson rounded things off with 24 not out. Belhus totalled 124-4 from their 20 overs and felt pretty happy with their work. Wicket takers for the visitors were Callum Greene, Haydn Owen and Gab Seaton.
Belhus took the field and Callum Constantine struck an early blow for Belhus catching Jake Brazier off his own bowling. But Orsett and Thurrock then hit back as Dhruv Solanki (26), Max Cook (26) and Callum Greene (28) all batted strongly and put Belhus on the back foot. Indeed after 15 of their 20 overs, Orsett were effectively cruising to victory on 107 for 2. But as ever the Belhus team did not give up. Oliver Plunkett bowled a crucially tight spell taking 1 for 5 from his 2 overs, his wicket being a fine tumbling catch by yes you guessed it Henry Overy. The game was now in the balance, the Orsett and Thurrock lower order panicked as the dot balls mounted. Charlotte Waters made two stunning stops at mid wicket to stop certain boundaries - which would have taken the game for the Knights. So Henry grasped the ball for the last over with the score on 120-6. Five needed for an Orsett win. The drama started with two dot balls and then two run outs followed, the retired Greene returned to the crease for ball 5, only for Overy to send him on his way bowled. This brought back the retired Cook who now had one ball to hit a six to win or four for a tie. Henry was having none of it though and fired in another yorker which Cook could only play on to his stumps. So a dramatic win for Belhus and a firm reminder that the game is never over until it is over and that this young Belhus side again showed that they rarely give up any lost cause. To win by just 4 runs means five league wins out of five and the U13's remain unbeaten in 2019. Well played all.
