Stanford-le-Hope v Belhus Cricket Club Under 11 on Sun 23 Jun 2019 at 09:30
Belhus Cricket Club Lost by 26 runs
Match report
The Under 11s visited Stanford-le-Hope on a bright Sunday morning. Winning the toss, Belhus asked Stanford to bat and immediately pressure was built through good opening spells by the ever-consistent Ben Gladman and 2 very fine overs from young Max Ballard. Oliver Davy picked up a wicket in his first over after he removed George F's off stump and Rhys Williams then produced the best spell of bowling of the year, clean-bowling 13 year old Indy of Stanford twice in consecutive overs finishing with figures of 2 wickets for 3 runs in his 3 overs. Stanford were on the back foot, Aaryian Kansagra picked up the wicket of Emma in his 2nd over then Belhus went back-to-back as James Webb run out Emma again with a lovely direct hit from deep mid on the very next ball. Stanford looked to be crumbling due to the impressive bowling performance from the young Belhus attack. However, Stanford turned the game towards the end due to good knocks from Bobby (8) George C (7) and Harry (23) (who was 12 years of age playing in an under 11 game?) in their favour. Belhus did not give up though, James Maynard stepped up and clean-bowled George C in his final over, and James Webb bowled a fantastic delivery to remove Bobbys middle stump, a mix up off the last ball meant James Maynard was able to run out Harry of Stanford and Belhus deservedly finished on top at the half as there innings closed on 73 runs for 8 wickets for a NET total of 49 runs.
After a fantastic bowling performance as a team, arguably their best yet, the Under 11s were full of confidence and set about the chase in probably the wrong way. Perhaps a little eager to get the game going, the boys unfortunately were run out 6 times for the first 6 wickets. After practising running pretty much every week, it was a little disappointing to see the majority hitting the ball and running regardless of where fielders were positioned and after showing great initiative while running between the wickets so far it did come as a shock. However, good knocks by Ben (6), James Maynard (6) Rhys (4) James W (5) and a fantastic pull shot from Alex Newell - the best shot of the season thus far - meant the Under 11s finished on a respectable total. For Stanford, Harry bowled well to claim 3 wickets and Emma bowled well to claim 2 wickets, I'd like to say Stanford were deserving winners but on another day, I think the result could haver been a little different.
Saying this, the bowling was superb and I thought was a little better than Stanford's on the day, this speaks volumes from the younger players that have stepped up to hard ball this year. Very well done everyone - a great job look forward to seeing how the rest of the games pan out.
