Horndon-on-the-Hill v Belhus Cricket Club Under 11 on Sun 12 May 2019 at 09:30
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 20 Runs
Match report
On a bright, but somewhat chilly Sunday morning, the Under 11s began their league season away at Horndon-on-the-Hill. Matthew Friend won the first toss of the year and elected to field. Lewys and Rhys opened the bowling in the new 17 yard format, Lewys struggled to find his line early but bowled a nice tidy second over bowling only 1 wide. Rhys bowled his 2 overs for only 2 runs including a maiden and some sharp fielding restricted Horndon in the first 4 overs to only 8 runs with no runs off the bat. Ben and senior player Alex Newell then bowled the next 4 overs together. Ben’s consistent line created problems for Harley and Bailey of Horndon as he clean bowled both batsmen in consecutive overs. Alex bowled one loose delivery that was put to the boundary but then responded by bowling a few nice deliveries outside off stump conceding only 7 runs in his 2 over’s and after 8 overs Horndon were sitting on 17 runs, 2 wickets down. Oliver and Aariyan then followed up and bowled a nice 4 overs between them consistently bowling outside off stump making it difficult for the Horndon boys to score freely. Aaryian's first over was a maiden and Oliver's second over was lovely and straight and pressure was building for Horndon as they still struggled to find singles from the good fielding and backing up. After 12 overs, Horndon were sitting on 25 runs, 2 wickets down still. George Hirt, James Webb and Matthew Friend then bowled the last 7 overs between them. George bowled a lovely 2 overs, bowling 2 maidens conceding 0 runs off his bowling, this then allowed James to clean-bowl Horndon’s Louis in the 16th over with a lovely yorker hitting the very base of the stumps - a really impressive wicket. Matthew Friend then hit top form during Ben Gladman's 3rd over as they tried to take a quick single to him at mid on only for him to launch the ball into the stumps without the batsman even getting half way down the wicket – a truly great piece of fielding. Matt then finished up claiming a caught and bowled in his final over taking Horndon to a gross total of 58 runs, 5 wickets taken.
43 runs was the target then. Lewys and Oliver opened up and batted sensibly hitting the ball straight pinching 3 singles between them and along with some wayward bowling from Horndon at the beginning, put on 20 runs in the first 3 over’s without conceding any wickets - a good start. Aaryian and Ben batted 3 and 4 and with some good calling and sensible batting took the score closer, Ben hitting 4 nice singles and Aaryian with some nice shots however always finding fielders. The score was 36 for 1 wicket when Rhys and Stan came together and these 2 edged the score even closer as Rhys hit a nice shot for 2 runs past the bowler and Stan hitting a few nice singles along with some nice calling from Rhys in particular took the score past 43 for still only 1 wicket. Alex Newell and George batted 7 and 8 and came together in the 14th over, George unluckily edged one on to his stumps and then after a good delivery from Horndon's Riley gave his team 2 much-needed wickets. However, these two then consolidated and Alex batted very sensibly knowing the score and what was required of them. James Webb then stepped in and smashed 19 runs from his 12 balls including 4 boundaries, and together with Matthew put on 27 runs without conceding any wickets and brought us to a Final score of 85 runs for 4 wickets, 20 runs the winning margin.
A good confidence booster for many of the younger players in the squad, and this bodes well for the rest of the season. Well played. We have Benfleet away next week in the Cup so let’s aim for a similar performance.
