Belhus Cricket Club Saturday 5th XI v Benfleet 4th XI (40/40) on Sat 29 Jun 2019 at 12.30pm
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 40 Runs
Match report
On a stiflingly hot afternoon at Corringham Rec, Belhus kept cool to get back to winning ways in this SNEL 4th XI (East) Division 1 match.
Skipper Jim Robertson won the toss and happily chose to bat in the warm conditions. However the Benfleet bowlers enjoyed themselves as Belhus slumped to 48 for 5 with Jack Thomas making 25 but Brown (3-22) really putting the squeeze on Belhus. However Brian Edwards (45 not out) and Arin Gangopaduhay (32) combined well to add a vital partnership of 77 for the 6th wicket, calculating that if Belhus batted their overs a total in the region of 150 would not be an easy chase. Belhus did indeed last out their 40 over making 148-7 and thus, in the old adage, had a total to bowl at. The young Benfleet attack bowled well with Lilliot (1-17) and Polybank (1-21) worthy of note.
So Belhus set about defending their total. The start was sedate but Aidan Fourie made two early breakthroughs removing both openers LBW. But Ayres (30) and Mabey (13) started to take control for Benfleet, Indeed at 58-2 the game seemed to be slipping away for Belhus. But Tyler Robertson intervened with a key two-wicket burst as he returned fine figures of 2 for 16 from 8 overs. Kyle Hewson (1-25) then removed key man Ayres and Belhus were suddenly back in the game. Fourie returned to take another two wickets finishing with career best figures of 4 for 20. Mike Squires was miserly with 1-25 from his set of 8 overs and Billy Baker joined in with 1 for 11 as Belhus took control. There were two catches for Jack Thomas and one each for Fourie and Baker. And when skipper Robertson ran out last man Plumb, the game was won for Belhus by a comfortable 40 run margin. Credit to all for sticking it out on what was an uncomfortably hot afternoon.
