Match report The Blaze Sets The Heat on Fire

The end of the league phase of the season was marked by waking up to another dry day, (and a nonsensical match report headline!). One more visit to Thames Rugby Club; the astro pitch, the dust bowl outfield and the generous squash laid on by the bar maid. This time the visitors were Hadleigh and Thundersley's White team. This game had been a long time coming due to various forms of inclement weather so it was a relief to finally do the toss. And what a toss it was! Captain Christian won only his second toss of the summer and elected to bowl first. From top to bottom the bowling was accurate and effective. Six wickets were taken but it was the accuracy that impressed those looking on from the boundary. Only six wide balls and four No Balls in one hundred and twenty deliveries set the tone together with dozens of dot balls. Advikhaa and Ethan set the tone with early wickets but Eesa and Christian followed up during their spells to take two apiece. By the end of their innings Hadleigh had only managed to score sixty-nine and the Blaze left the field after some good fielding, confident that it was within reach.

That confidence was rocked almost immediately after the first pair returned after losing four wickets. Twenty runs deducted and only nine scored meant the others had their work cut out. The second pair also lost a wicket but score nine runs so at least left the field in credit. Louie and Olly found it tough to score as the bowling improved but crucially had stemmed the flow of wickets. Cometh the hour, cometh the big hitters and Mahad and Rayyan strode out with their work cut out. Also Rayyan was bowled they added sixteen in quick succession. Assisted by a good number of No Balls the last pair walked out knowing Belhus had a narrow lead. Eesa and Christian weren't about to let that slip and set out to make the gap comfortable. Eesa took important singles, which allowed Christian to hit his shots, scoring sixteen from his twelve.

By the end of the game it was Belhus who were the worthy winners, a win that saw them cement third place in the league and a slot in the play-offs. The Blaze have done well and will look to carry this momentum into the remainder of the summer.
