Getting Closer.

Our second Under 12s game took place in much cooler conditions and with a sense the team was more prepared. The first game taught valuable lessons that were put into practice; the result was much closer this time around. Captain Christian Remmer lost the toss and, unfortunately, hasn't yet won one. The Harold Wood captain put Belhus in to bat and the openers strolled out to the middle. Almost immediately, the pitch started misbehaving. Most balls pitched as expected but many simply died and almost rolled along to the batter. This caught out players on both sides. However, Mahad Jawad had the measure of the pitch and ran sensibly to score 46 from 41 balls. An outstanding performance in such conditions. He anchored the innings but was ably assisted by Eesa Naveed and George Hill, who both reached double figures. Others made starts but were either undone by the inconsistent bounce or by simply missing a straight ball. Harold Wood's bowling was somewhat kind and produced a good number of extras. The last batter was out from the last ball of the penultimate over and Belhus left the field relatively satisfied with their score of 142.

After a short break, Belhus took the field and prepared to defend their total. This was an innings of two halves. The first was frugal and the batters found scoring runs hard work. However, Harold Wood's fifth batter found the gaps and ran very well to score a magnificent 57 (not out) from 41 balls, which included eight fours. It was this innings that made the difference and, with only three needed from the last over, he was in the perfect position to knock off the last runs and win the game by five wickets.

So, a much better performance with the bat. The bowling was generally accurate and the task now is to convert that accuracy into more wicket taking balls. With two more games of the group phase to go, pulling all the lessons together means a win is closer than ever.
