Great Baddow Under 12 119-5

A Valuable Lesson

The first match of our Under 12s campaign kicked off at home against Great Baddow. The sun was shining and the sky was blue, conditions the players weren't used to this year. Most of the team comprised of current Under 11s squad members and almost all of them had never played under the competition rules. The opposition, however, play in a dedicated Under 12s league and were seasoned to the format. Ultimately, this made the difference between the two sides, especially in the batting department.

Belhus lost the toss and was put into bat. Unfortunately, the innings got off to a bad start after both openers were out for ducks in the first three balls. However, Christian Remmer steadied the ship, batting intelligently and building an excellent partnership with Mahad Jawad. Christian was batting well and initially given out in a very unusual manner. After the ball hit his bat it lodged in his pad. One of the fielders then collected the ball and claimed a catch. This was initially given by the umpires on the field. Soon after, the more obscure laws of cricket were examined by the parents of the opposition and, after some discussion between coaches, Great Baddow graciously offered the opportunity for Christian to be reinstated. After the next wicket, Christian returned to the crease and continued to play well. Eventually, he was bowled but only after scoring a fantastic 46 against some very good bowling. Mahad Jawad and Ollie McWilliams also reached double figures but most players either failed to score or couldn't stay at the crease long enough to make an impact. Belhus were bowled out for 117.

The temperature had risen even more when Belhus took the ball to bowl. Both teams had been treated to snacks and a fantastic cake so spirits were high. However, despite taking a wicket with the first ball, and then another with the last ball of the first over, the next pair piled on the runs. Joseph Roworth, (who made 48) and George Cussell found the gaps in the field and began scoring at over ten an over. Despite the bowling improving, they were still able to put away the odd bad ball and chased down the total in only fourteen overs. It was a valuable lesson in how to bat differently in pairs cricket and the team will will be ready for the next challenge against Harold Wood.
