On a delightful summer's afternoon at North Stifford, our 2nd XI entertained West Essex who were put in to bat.

Losing wickets regularly West Essex soon found themselves on the back foot when perched on 62 for 5, but a sixth wicket partnership of 72 brought them back in the game. But after Bilal Zazai fell for 36 Belhus were again in the driving seat as they captured three wickets for 68 and West Essex were finally pegged back to an under-par 201 for 9 after their allotted 45 overs. Henry Overy was the pick of the Belhus bowlers with 3 for 32.

After tea, and optimistic of chasing a mediocre target, Belhus soon lost 3 wickets to Imran Safdar and found themselves sitting uncomfortably on 32 for 3. But then a determined 58-run 4th wicket partnership between Jack Plane and Wayne Read, swung the game back in favour of Belhus before Plane fell for 39 with the scoreboard showing 90 for 4.

Henry Overy then joined Read at the crease and together they batted sensibly to take complete control of the situation and steered the 2nd XI home without fuss to secure a comfortable 6-wicket win in 33.4 overs. Overy (51*) and Read (70*) both deserved their match-winning half-centuries.

With two League matches remaining, the 2nd XI's unbeaten run of six matches will not see them gain promotion despite some fine individual performances, and skipper Martin Mailey will no doubt reflect back on the rocky start to their 2026 campaign and think of what might have been . . .
