Orsett and Thurrock v Belhus Cricket Club Under 11 Blaze on Fri 18 Jul 2025 at 5.30pm
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 86 Runs

Match report Blazing Under the Summer Sun.

As a warm up for the Sunday semi-final game Belhus arrived at Orsett and Thurrock to play their second friendly game against sides in the first division. The well-earned victory the previous weekend against Stanford-Le-Hope had given the Belhus players confidence that they are capable of beating any team on their day. For this Friday evening fixture, warm-up was the right expression, given it had been over 30 degrees during the day! Many of our longer-standing players were pleased to see Nooh Malik in the Orsett side. He had left Belhus over the winter to join them. This was the second Orsett team the Blaze had played this season after losing by just one run to the Scorchers in a cup game. Therefore, this game against the Tigers had an element of revenge in the back of the player's minds. Captain, Christian Remmer won the toss and elected to bowl first. The pitch was artificial and the outfield was fast so an assessment of how best to bat was in order.

As ever, the Belhus bowling attack knew what they had to do; what they had been doing very well for the last few games. Keep the bowling tight and accurate, thereby keeping the number of wides and no balls to a minimum. This they did very well again. Not only that but wickets fell on a regular basis, achieved either by run outs, fine catches but mostly by sending those bails to Wales! In all, 8 wickets we lost by Orsett. The pick of the bowlers this time was Rayyan Kamran. He almost achieved a hat-trick by clean bowling two batters and then just having a third strike a pad instead. The only time the coaches have wished for the more traditional LBW rule to be introduced to Under 11s! Some sharp fielding to accompany the quality bowling meant that no batter managed double figures and Orsett finished on 88 for 8.

During the break the players took on some much needed squash and biscuits kindly provided by the home team. With an achievable score to make an attempt was also made to get the players to take on advice about protecting their stumps and only playing shots when the ball was not going on to hit the stumps. On this occasion the players did absorb the advice and began their innings playing sensible shots and keeping patient. Lithra Prabaharan and Advikhaa Kirubagaran made a fantastic start by protecting their wickets and taking safe runs. Advikhaa topped off a great personal display by scoring a boundary. If this wasn't pleasing enough the next pair (Zaki Khaled and Abhinav Dharmani) help themselves to some friendly bowling but scoring 22 from the 24 balls they faced. This included a six from the former. It looked like it was going to be caught but was palmed over the rope by a desperately lunging fielder. The third pair then really inflicted damage withe Arthur Saleem scoring 18 and Arturo Cowdrey-Martinez scoring 15. Both players implemented the tactics beautifully and found the gaps in the field with almost every shot. The game was almost won by the time the penultimate pair walked to the middle although the loss of two of the three wickets did unsettle the batters. However, they left the field after scoring 15 and set up the final pair to bring the game home. Eesa Naveed and Christian Remmer scored 10 and 14 respectively to enable Belhus to amass an impressive total of 149 and secure a win by 86 runs.

All concerned were hot, tired but happy. Revenge had been taken for the cup exit and confidence had been boosted by another win. Their 9th in 12 games. Focus now turns to the play-off game against Old Southendians in Shoeburyness in two days time. The weather looks set to be a lot cooler (and wet) but Belhus are currently on fire in a rich vein of form. Well done to the players and the wider squad for the highs experience this season thus far. They will be hoping to make it one to remember by carrying the momentum all the way to the play-off final.
