Match report The Barest of Margins

The first cup game for the team (and many of the players) unfortunately was also the last for this season following a loss away at Orsett.

The stage was set. A Friday evening game at our local rivals on the last weekday before the end of half term. Two players making their first appearance for the team, (Abhinav and Anastasia), and an opposition currently undefeated so far. The Blaze also came into the game on an unbeaten run so it was all to play for. However, there were nerves about the difference in the rule for cup games that states 'when you're out, you're out'! Putting this to the back of their minds, Belhus began by bowling first and bowling well. The Orsett batters were either dismissed cheaply or got set and scored well. Wyatt McArthur provided the highlight by retiring not out on 28. Eesa Naveed was the pick of the bowlers, taking two wickets for 9 runs in his two overs. However, Orsett finished their innings with what seemed to be a fantastic score of 120.
Heads were down but new belief was found during the break and the Blaze batters walked out knowing they needed a run a ball. Confidence was boosted by Christian Remmer, who started scoring and very soon pushed the scoring rate above what was needed. George Hill steadied the ship after losing two cheap wickets and played a great innings of 14 from 29 balls. The team needed his stability and ability to face some quality bowling. However, two more wickets fell soon after he was run out and Belhus were in trouble. Up stepped Mahad Jawad and Arturo Cowdrey-Martinez. Their shot selection and running between the wickets were fantastic and the pair were there at the death when eight was needed from the final over. That eight was chipped away by sensible shots through the gaps in the field until only three was required from the final ball. The supporters of both teams were on the edge of their seats as the bowler ran in for the final time.

Sadly, they could only find one and the game was lost but just a single run. Mahad finished on 17 from 20 balls and Arturo made 10 from the 16 he faced. It was a tough result to be on the wrong side of, but the team left feeling positive about their performance. As the saying goes, we can now concentrate on the league and will look to get back to winning ways as soon as possible.
