Old Southendian & Southchurch Under 11 - Devils v Belhus Cricket Club Under 11 Blaze on Sun 22 Jun 2025 at 9.30am
Belhus Cricket Club Won by 11 Runs
Match report
Phew! What a Scorcher!
The sun was out in full force in the morning of this game against Old Southendian and Southchurch (OSS) but the action was equally as hot.
Instead of fish and chips it was the bat and ball that took the players to the seaside for this match. No-one was sure whether it was their throats or the outfield that was more dry when the time came for the captains to do the toss. In the absence of a coin it was a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors that decided how the game would start. Christian Remmer's scissors were duly blunted by the OSS captain's rock and Belhus were asked to bat first. Moments later, Lithra Prabaharan and Runa Singh strode out understanding their assignment perfectly. They focused valiantly on their task, losing only one wicket but scoring seven runs. Their time at the crease set the tone for the rest of the innings and also set an example for the batters to follow. It was a good pitch on which to score runs and the team set about getting bat on ball and making hay while the sun (literally) shone. The team piled pressure on the OSS fielders by using the fast outfield to ensure they didn't miss an opportunity to take a run or two. This produced even more runs from misfields and overthrows. Each pair watched the ball and picked off the bad ones very well. Three players made it to double figures, namely George Hill (11), Mahad Jawad (13) and Christian Remmer (15) but all played well. OSS's bowling was mostly straight and the extras were fewer than Belhus had seen in other games but, crucially only 5 wickets had been lost.
After the break it was the Blaze's turn to bowl and took to the field knowing the importance of being accurate but also the need to be fully switched on. The former was admirable with very few wides and no balls being conceded. The latter improved as the innings progressed but was a little too 'entertaining' at times. Some questionable runs from the OSS batters tempted a few wayward attempts at run outs, which gave the spectators some heart in the mouth moments and left them wishing for a healthy dose of boredom! Thankfully, the players soon settled down and began to put the pressure back on the batters by dealing with the ball more efficiently. OSS scored freely but mostly in singles and, crucially, lost wickets. Together with the fewer extras conceded, losing two more wickets than Belhus were deciding factors. At the end of the match Belhus had won by 11 runs, despite only scoring one more run than OSS off the bat.
They say that catches win matches but this game was decided by Belhus's accurate bowling, positive batting and application in the field. The very definition of a good all-round performance. In other words, it was truly a team effort. Everyone played their part to overcome a team that was currently top of the league and playing very good cricket. With three games to go Belhus are in a position to challenge for the league. There are still some tough fixtures to come but more of the same will make Belhus very hard to beat.
